Book Description

James Boswell called him 'the greatest man of any age'. As politician and diplomat, writer and lover, but above all as a military genius, Julius Caesar is one of the most perennially fascinating figures in history. Christian Meier's biography is the definitive, modern account of Caesar's life and career, and places him within the wider context of the crisis of the Roman republic. Written specifically for a general readership, this authoritative, stimulating book serves, amongst other things, as a reminder to those who believe that men are mere servants of historical forces that the great individual still has an unarguably significant part to play.

About the Author

Christian Meier is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Munich. He is one of Europe’s leading authorities on the late Roman Republic and is the author of ‘The Greek Discovery of Politics’, ‘The Political Art of Greek Tragedy’ and ‘Caesar’.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, Mar 3 2002

This review is from: Caesar a Biography (Paperback)
First of all I would like to mention that I read this book in German language, so I couldn't tell about the english translation. I'm a "hobby-historian" and until now this was the very best history book I ever read. In particular the chapter about the education in Rom I found very interesting/enlightening and in general I think that Meier has the ability to bring this ancient times "alive" (sorry for my un-eligant lenguage, I have still trouble with my english). Even though it was very dificult to understand sometimes and I had to re-read many parts, I got great benefits and understanding out of this book. I think it is helpfull to have a general knowlegde about Roman Republik and Ceasar before reading this book. In general I recomend this book to anybody eventhough it is more complicated and dificult to understand than maybe other Historiebook.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indepth yet a hard to read., Jan 30 2002
This review is from: Caesar a Biography (Paperback)
After reaading this book, I have to say that at times it may be a hard read for the casual reader. This book is well researched and is very enlightning. However, the translation from German is a bit confusing at times. I would recomend it to someone who knows a little bit about Roman society and is somewhat more knowlegable on Ceaser already.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best work on Caesar, Jan 22 2002
By
Jack Sexton (Sydney, New South Wales Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Caesar a Biography (Paperback)
Since the general content and merits of Meier's biography of the Great Julius Caesar have already been more than adequatley examined by previous reviewers, I shall only say that of the several recent works available, this is the finest.

Of particular interest to the reader may be Meier's musings on the existance and nature of historical greatness in the early chapters.

One of my few reservations is that the prose seems to have lost something in translation, rendering the early parts somewhat lacking in elegance.
