I avoided buying this CD because people kept complaining that they tried to, but got a CD of one of the reinventions of the show, and I wanted George Hearn. (Outside of Len Cariou, the best Sweeney Todd yet...)
The cast is fantastic, the songs are wonderful, the performances brilliant, the orchestration vibrant, melodic, forceful, gentle....whatever was perfect for the moment.
I have only one complaint - I love Jerry Herman's music, which it seems there will be no more of - and while each time it happens, the songs are well adjusted for plot and characters, there are too many reprises and not enough new and different melodies. George Hearn's "I Am what I Am" is even used by the chorus in the opening number. Why? Leave it to George, who made it an instant hit, though several others in the show should have, and would have in earlier times, been on the hit parade.
"The Best of Times" is one that I am surprised has not been used by singers everywhere.
So now that the original original cast is available, do buy it if you liked "Dolly", or "Mame", or like me, fell in love with the score of "Mack and Mabel" (which failed because of the book, not the songs and not the cast...) ("I Won't Send Roses" is one of Robert Preston's best moments including "76 Trombones", and Bernadette Peters' "Time Heals Everything" is quite probably the best 'broken-heart' song ever written or recorded.)
So try "La Cage", a much more mature show than the movie versions were, and filled with glorious Jerry Herman songs...just not enough of them.

One of the best musicals ever written! Saw it many years ago with Peter Marshall and Keene Curtis who was a good friend of mine.

"You meet your mistress and your boyfriend and your wife" Oct. 10 2014

This is the original cast album in CD form of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, the 1983 Broadway musical based on the French play and movie of the same name. We expect musicals on the Great White Way to be joyous, exuberant and festive -- this one, set in a St. Tropez drag cabaret, is all that and gay too. The show ran over four years and won six Tony awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book (Harvey Fierstein), after which composer Jerry Herman, counting himself delighted, hung up his musical spurs and retired. All Jerry's songs are here, including "Masculinity," "I Am What I Am," which has become a virtual Gay anthem in the intervening 31 years, and "The Best of Times Is Now," a sing-along for all about the beauties of living life to the maximum. The sound engineering is fine, the album is in eco-friendly cardboard format, and the accompanying booklet has photos but not lyrics -- not that I think you will need them. Should be part of every musical-lover's library. Highly recommended.

Love La Cage July 20 2013
By Eric the Read - Published on Amazon.com
This original cast album of La Cage is great! Don't be confused by the one star it was given based on its packaging by another reviewer. The cast and full orchestrations, which are a missing element of the new cast recording, are fantastic. Jerry Herman at his best!

Loved the music! Feb. 1 2014

It had been a long time since I saw either the play or movie. Listening to the Broadway Cast brought the joyous memories flooding back to me instantly. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys musicals and wants to have an iconic example of one to listen to time and time again.

This fantastic CD never gets old! June 26 2014

I've loved this story in pretty much every iteration, starting with the French film with English sub-titles (and I don't like sub-titles!). So when I heard Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein were doing it for Broadway, I couldn't wait to get the CD and I was NOT disappointed. This is arguably Jerry Herman's best work! The "let's get this party started" of the opening number, the wistful sweet message in "Look Over There", the anthem of "I Am What I Am", the brilliance of "Cocktail Counterpoint" (how does someone WRITE something like that!), and the "sing along, you know you want to" of "The Best of Times"... well, you get the idea.

If you enjoyed "The Birdcage", you'll like this soundtrack of the Broadway show it came from. Even if you aren't familiar with the play or the film, you'll love the sountrack anyway!

A Broadway Gem remastered on CD Feb. 16 2014

I had overlooked this album for years and when I was browsing the web decided to finally purchase it. I have never seen the show on stage, but I had seen the movie and the Birdcage (based on the show). Jerry Herman's score rings as true to the characters as he did in Mame you can feel the emotion in the lyric and music. If you are a Jerry Herman fan or if you enjoy a light hearted romp with Drag Queens this album won't disappoint you.
