Although the crowd seems a bit sparse at times, the performances
filmed for CALIFORNIA CLASSIC ROCK are competent recapitulations
of the songs that made Canned Heat, Eric Burdon,The Standells,
The Chambers Brothers, Peter Noone and others famous during the
'60's. Although the concert that is the focal point of the dvd
took place in the summer of 1986, it's easy to imagine that it
would have been fun to be there.

For the most part, CALIFORNIA CLASSIC ROCK was filmed, fduring
daylight hours and this does take away some of the mystique
of seeing and hearing familiar music played under the cloak of
darkness, under an open sky.

Seeming to enjoy itself (or liking the fact of being on camera)
the audience is full of middle-aged people still up for some fun
and a party atmosphere in an outdoor setting. The close-up
camera work is well suited to bringing the spirit of this kind of
eventto the viewer.

ERic Burdon performs edgy versions of the Animals hits Don't Let Me
Be Misunderstood and Don't Bring Me Down (one of his personal in-
concert favourites) and Canned Heat, with Going Up The Country
and On The Road Again demonstrate that later line-ups of once
well-known bands can deliver authentic and appealing renditions
of these songs.

Buffalo Springfield Revisited does Mr. Soul and For What It's
Worth--there are some welcome opportunities to catch glimpses of the
original Springfield's rhythm section of Dewey Martin and
the animated Bruce Palmer. For some odd reason, The Standells'
strong reading of Dirty Water is punctuated by the presence of a bikini-
clad young woman in spangly white boots, joining on stage and gyrating
to the music.

A piece of crap April 5 2005
By C. Byars - Published on
Format: DVD
This is the biggest piece of crap that I have seen in a long time. The video is bad, the sound is worse. The mix sounds like it was recorded in a barrel. I honestly think the soundtrack was taken from the live cameras. The songs fade in and out, start in the middle of songs and cuts some songs in half. Furthermore Buffalo Springfield is Buffalo Springfield Revisited. Awful.

groovy June 21 2007

i like it. i checked it out of the library...and i was blown away. 20 years or so after the summer of love...and this stuff still made me feel good and made me happy. others may put a downer on it....but i think its great or i would not have bought it. it brought back many memories...and a lot of feeling....and, speaking for someone who was in that era....i really like it and think if you want feelings to come to you as they were then...then enjoy. the music speaks for itself.
