This review is from: California Jam 1974 (Audio CD)
This legendary US 1974 show at the Ontario speedway CA Los Angeles had been released already by the european EMI and american record company for three years ago. The whole set signifies the same album but with different remixes such as Jon Lord's introduction to the american audience from Deep Purple MK III with two new boys at that time David Coverdale & Glenn Hughes. But the japanese graphic album sleeve is totally different, it is designed by a japanese songtext. From the beginning of the show you can listen to Ritchie Blackmore's hot guitar playing, when he started to warm his fingers at his Fender Stratocaster, then he played the riffs like a demon and finally smashed the neck of his Stratocaster to the camera lens of ABC. He also exploded his guitar amps, boxes, speakers and throwed the guitar to the audience. The huge california stage was almost destroyed into a huge smoke, if Ritchie would not have controlled his abusive attitude!!!
PS: u can also check out to the DVD release, it has been also called LIVE AT THE CALIFORNIA JAM 1974 like the soundtrack audio cd.

This review is from: California Jam 1974 (Mini Lp Sleeve) (Audio CD)
The Deep Purple concert from the April 6, 1974, California Jam at Ontario Motor Speedway has been released in a number of "bootleg" versions since the mid-1970s, and has only received solid remastering on the 2003 authorized releases on Purple Records and this import from Japan.
Technical problems marred the show, with Ritchie Blackmore's frustration shown by throwing a number of guitars into the crowd and using a guitar to smash into a video camera that blocked his view of the crowd. A pyrotechnic effect also malfunctioned, which briefly set a portion of the stage on fire.
A track omitted on the prior releases - Lay Down, Stay Down - is included, with the sound quality as clean as possible. This album has emerged from oftentimes very sloppy bootlegs to one that kicks out the jams as well as possible.
