Recent research tells us that one of the keys to student success is self-regulation – the ability to monitor and modify emotions, to focus or shift attention, to control impulses, to tolerate frustration or delay gratification. But can a child’s ability to self-regulate be improved?

Canada’s leading expert on self-regulation, Dr. Stuart Shanker, knows it can and that, as educators, we have an important role to play in helping students’ develop this crucial ability. Distinguished Research Professor at York University and Past President of the Council for Early Child Development, Dr. Shanker leads us through an exploration of the five major domains—what they are, how they work, what they look like in the classroom, and what we can do to help students strengthen in that domain.

About the Author

Stuart Shanker is a Distinguished Research Professor of Philosophy and Psychology at York University. Dr. Shanker is currently serving as Director of the Milton and Ethel Harris Research Initiative (MEHRI) at York University, a privately funded initiative whose goal is to build on new knowledge of the brain’s development, and help set children (including those with developmental disorders) on the path towards emotional and intellectual health.

Dr. Shanker has just been appointed the Director of EPIC: an international initiative created to promote the educational potential in children by enhancing their self-regulation. He has served as the Director of the Council of Human Development for the past ten years; Director of the Canada-Cuba Research Alliance for the past six years; and he was the first President of the Council of Early Child Development in Canada. Over the past decade he has served as an advisor on early child development to government organizations across Canada and the US and countries around the world, among them Australia, Colombia, England, Ireland, Macedonia, Madagascar, Mexico, Northern Ireland, Peru, Romania and Serbia. Most notable among these is his involvement in the creation of the new early learning program in Ontario (viz. "The Pascal Report," for which he also wrote the preface).

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all teachers Oct. 25 2012
Format:Paperback
Did we really need another book about how to help children in school? We certainly needed this book, and Professor Shanker has done a superb job putting a rather difficult and complex new approach - the science of self-regulation - into language that is easy to understand; the content of the book is profound in its implications and a tremendously rich resource for teachers who are doing their best to help students with self-regulation challenges. The book is giving us hope that with the right techniques we can make a difference and help children develop skills that can make a significant difference to their academic and social progress.I highly recommend the book to all teachers and parents (notwithstanding that it was written primarily with teachers in mind).

5.0 out of 5 stars A+ from home-schooling grandmother Jan. 5 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I first heard about Calm, Alert and Learning on CBC Radio interview show and ordered it right away. It really is the way to work with kids. With 30 years at college and university teaching level, I tried ONE day of substitute teaching in a noisy, out of control 6th grade US class room. Never again! I am currently up in Canada with my grandson, 3 and granddaugther, 18 mos working at the kitchen table with Pre K stuff and lots of crafts. Shanker's book immediately reminded me of what it could and should be like for these kids when they start "real" school. If it isn't, well, we may just all be gathered 'round the kitchen table again - calm, alert and learning. Judith Carruthers, Kanata, Ontario.

5.0 out of 5 stars Self-regulation is a matter for adults working with /caring for children as much as the children themselves! Nov. 17 2013
By Debra Mainwaring - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very easy to access this book and dip in and out for wisdom.
Particularly relevant for those working with children placed in out of home care.
Shared elements on recent multi-professional training and a forum - well received - provides another lens for supporting children with complex needs. I particularly liked emphasis on adults around the children modelling their own self-regulation and how we need to do a lot of personal development ourselves if we are going to commence or continue to work with this group of children.
