Nice and big without the tall sides like on stockpots Dec 4 2010
By C. Keller - Published on Amazon.com
This review is written for the Calphalon Contemporary Stainless 8-qt. Dutch Oven & Cover

This pot measures about 12.25" inches across the top, and about 4.6" inches tall.

The big pot that comes with most cookware sets is only about 5 or 6 quarts, anything bigger and you are usually looking at stockpots (I already have them). I wanted something bigger, but without the tall sides. I didn't want the heavy weight of a cast iron dutch oven. I didn't want nonstick, because no matter how good it is, it always wears out eventually. I didn't want aluminum, because it will pit with certain foods. I also wanted a pot that I could use on the stove, as well as in the oven.

This Calphalon Contemporary Stainless 8-Quart Dutch Oven fit my needs perfectly. It is fully tri-ply stainless steel (not just the bottom). It is dishwasher, oven, and broiler safe (up to 500°F, although I believe the lid is only safe up to 450°F). It will work with any stove top, including induction. It comes with a lifetime warranty. It cooks great, and cleans up nice (use a little "Bar Keepers Friend" to keep your stainless steel shiny and new looking).

The only negative is; the lip is not beveled, which can cause liquid to run down the side when pouring.

The price is very reasonable considering it'll last you a lifetime (my mom has some try-ply stainless steel pots that are over 50 years old). The only other pots that I found that compared in size and quality to this one, were more than twice the price. So I'm very glad I found this one.

All-in-all, it's a very versatile pot (you can cook small things in a big pot...but you can't cook big things in a small pot).

Outstanding Value Aug. 26 2006
By Tracy A. Meyers - Published on Amazon.com
I researched many roaster pans before I settled on this and am I glad I did. It offers a truly stovetop worthy construction, no bending or warping, a great v rack, and superb heat distribution. The handles are comfortable and the pan fits perfectly in the oven. Compared to the AllClad, it is less expensive and better performance. A well thought out pan.

Unbelievable price for a great pot! Nov. 11 2005
By Ghislaine Schwartz - Published on Amazon.com
First of all, in case you're concerned, let me say that the quality of Calphalon's stainless cookware has greatly improved as they have recently made the switch from not-so-good impact-bonded stainless bottom (Simply Stainless) to a tri-ply construction that's on par with All-Clad.

As a result, this pan offers very good heat retention and distribution (i.e. no hot spots), and clean-up is a breeze. Since I got this pan, I have been using it for every thing from small batches of soup, cheese sauce for mac'n'cheese, spinach filling for spanakopita... And with that rounded bottom, I cannot wait to make risotto!

Also, the glass lid fits very nicely and makes it easy to watch what's going on inside your pan.

This is not just a great value for the price -it's a great pan, which just happens to have an unbeatable price.

Great roasting pan Aug. 2 2006

This pan is just the right size and weight for large roasts and turkeys. The clean up was easy and although it is dishwasher safe, per the use and care guide, I didn't find it necessary. I cook rib roasts using very high heat for 15 - 20 minutes depending on the number of ribs and then turn off the heat and let it set in the oven for a couple hours. The key to this working is even heat distribution and even loss of heat as the oven cools. It worked like a dream, no surprises. I have other Calphalon pots and pans and have been a fan for years - this is no exception - excellent!

Not tri-ply. Amazon description incorrect. Dec 4 2012
By N. Caine - Published on Amazon.com
The reviews here have some that say, "Wonderful tri-ply construction" (like Amazon's description as of Nov 2012) and a couple that dispute it. Well three days before Black Friday I emailed Calphalon customer service to get an answer whether this was the same stockpot that they sell separately as the Contemporary Stainless 8qt stockpot. Their email back on Black Friday itself said only, "They have different model numbers." That was helpful! I stared at the pictures on-line and noticed that the base of this one was obscured in the photo. So I took a chance with a great Black Friday coupon and bought this. I feel ripped off. I am staring at the box itself of the multipot next to the boxes from others in this line. The other boxes say tri-ply and this one only says "aluminum bottom" -- yes, it's a cheapo stockpot with a disc bottom, like the 20 dollar stockpots. It is not like the triply stockpot sold without the inserts. I cannot return it because it would invalidate the terms of the coupon and the bonus set -- I would be charged more to return it than it costs.

It is a low quality pot. Avoid it.

FOLLOWUP:

Having now bought individually the 8qt stockpot (which is also the one that comes in the sets) that comes without the inserts, I am sorry to find that the steamer and pasta inserts of the multipot do NOT fit the standard 8 qt stockpot of this line. Thought others would want to know that.
