nicely surprised, Dec 15 2005

I bought this book through the Scholastic books sale at school. I would never have picked it out, but my son wanted it. It's one of those "Where's Waldo"-type books, with a Christmas theme. The actual Night Before Christmas poem is featured in the front of the book, with phrases from the poem on each 2-page spread.
Each spread has a list of items to search for in the photographs. The items are sometimes obvious and sometimes ingeniously hidden (in plain sight, often).
Both my kids, 5-1/2 and 3-1/2, loved this book! I was surprised at how focused they were on finding the items, and asked for it again and again.
The photos are heavy with shadows in spots, making it harder to find the items, but their young eyes picked out items I never saw!
I did a turnaround on these books, going so far as to order another in the series for them this Christmas. My older child was very adept at this; my younger child found it a little harder, but with encouragement, stayed with it.
I'd recommend it.

I bought this book for my kids ages six and seven. Good mix of tough to find and easy to find. If you are thinking of giving this as a gift I think it would be good for ages five and up.

See for Yourself!, Jan 2 2007

Can You See What I See? The Night Before Christmas, using The Night Before Christmas theme, is a seek and find it book similar to the 'I Spy Christmas: A Book of Picture Riddles' book. We bought one each for our granchildren so they could more easily and peacefully look for things together rather than trying to jockey the book to get the best viewing angle for themselves. This is another great low key way to spend some time together. It's a fun Christmas seek and find book. We like it and they enjoy it! I think I see a winner! ~ Mrs. B.
