This historic series has some of the greatest superstars playing in the prime of their careers. Legendary players such as WAYNE GRETZKY, MARIO LEMIEUX, MARK MESSIER, PAUL COFFEY and RAY BOURQUE among others face off against the equally brilliant IGOR LARIONOV, SERGEI MAKAROV, VLADISLAV FETISOV and the up and coming VALERI KAMENSKY – all pushing themselves to their personal limits in skill and emotion to win the last significant series between best on best prior to the breakup of the Soviet Union and the release of many Russian stars to the NHL.
MARIO LEMIEUX's goal, assisted by WAYNE GRETZKY in game 3 of the finals to win the Canada Cup was arguably one of the most memorable plays in Canadian hockey history.

The Best hockey action ever period.,
By
This review is from: Canada Cup '87 (DVD)
The 1987 Canada was by far the best hockey action ever. It pitted two main teams Canada and USSR in an epic three game final. Hall of Famers galore played in this tournament. On the Canadian side was Gartner, Hawerchuk, Messier, Coffey, Macinnis,Fuhr, Mario Lemieux, and of course the Great one Wayne Gretzky. On the Soviet squad you had the KLM line. Krutov, Larionov, and Makarov along with Kasatonov and Fetisov on Defense. The action was non stop end to end. You will never see any hockey like this ever again because some of the greatest players that ever laced em up were at the top of their game and in their prime. Simply stated this was the best hockey I have ever watched and it will never be duplicated.

IT IS PACKAGED TERRIBLY! Almost all the disks were ruined when I got them. I have never seen a dvd set packaged so bad! All the disks are packed so tight and two of them didn`t even have a place to put them like a typical case would have, they were just loose in the package!

I was 11 years old during the 87 Canada Cup and I remember it was all the kids (well, the boys) talked about at school for the two weeks it took place. As I watched all nine games (24 years later) I was overwhelmed by the end-to-end action, and I started to wish hockey was this wide open today. I'm kind of hoping that they would put out some of the other countries' games on second set as well (the Soviet-Sweden game to open the tournament comes to mind) but I doubt it will happen. As for the discs themselves, the quality is decent, very watchable. The only complaint I have is that after Lemieux's tournament winning goal, during the replays, for some reason the video quality goes sour and continues that way for the final 1:26 of action. Very disappointing that this happened. Very strange they couldn't find better quality video for that part of the game. However, it's not enough to take away any stars. A great set that I can't wait to share with my newborn son when he's old enough to appreciate it. 1 of 2 people found the following review helpful

This is a pricey dvd set, but the '87 Canada Cup is the gold standard for hockey fans--the most competitive and thrilling contest ever staged in the Canada Cup series. Gretzky and Lemieux in their prime, supported by Coffey, Bourque, Messier and a dozen other Canadian stars faced arguably the greatest Soviet side ever. There's no questioning the value of the series, and of the dvd set--if it were properly produced. My set, however, contains a third disc that is so glitchy that the crucial third periods of both the semifinal game between Canada and the Czechs, and the final round robin game with the Soviets are unwatchable. I haven't yet tried to watch the 3-game final (each game on its own disc), and I hope those discs are sound. But already I'm feeling cheated with the product, given that faulty third disc.
