Book Description

Nov 15 2011

Canadians enjoy one of the most stable forms of government on the planet, but there is a crisis in our understanding of the role the Crown plays in that government. Media often refer to the governor general as the Canadian head of state, and the queen is frequently misidentified in Canada as only the British monarch, yet she has been queen of Canada since 1952. Even government publications routinely cast the Crown as merely a symbolic institution with no impact on the daily lives of Canadians — this is simply not true. Errors such as these are echoed in school textbooks and curriculum outlines.

Canada's Constitutional Monarchy has been written to counter the misinformation given to Canadians, reintroducing them to a rich institution integral to our ideals of democracy and parliamentary government. Nathan Tidridge presents the Canadian Crown as a colourful and unique institution at the very heart of our Confederation, exploring its history from its beginnings in 16th-century New France, as well as its modern relationships with First Nations, Honours, Heraldry, and the day-to-day life of the country.

Review

"Nathan Tidridge's new book on the Canadian monarchy is an invaluable guide to all things royal in Canada. We were in danger of letting this hugely important institution fall by the wayside through neglect and ignorance, so his painstaking account of all that is entailed in our history and constitutional profile, is immensely valuable."

(John Fraser)

4.0 out of 5 stars An Amusing Book on an Important Subject Dec 27 2011
Format:Paperback
The jokey cover amused the people I gave this book to, while it put me off a bit. That aside, this book is full of wonderful pictures and illustrations and fascinating bits of information.

If you know anyone who is interested in royalty, Canada, or the intersection of the two, this is a great gift for them. (You might want to buy a copy for yourself, too.)

(I write as an American who has many Canadian friends and who frankly doubts that our Founding Fathers acted wisely when they left the protection of the Crown.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Resource Dec 11 2011
Format:Paperback
As the Crown is woven into the fabric of our nation, this book is an excellent resource for any Canadian who wants to understand the Monarchy in Canada, its historical context and its relevance for today. The Hamilton & District Branch of the Monarchist League of Canada recommends its use to any teacher or student of Canadian civics and history. It is apparent that the author has a clear understanding of the subject and a desire to see this subject matter accurately taught in Canadian classrooms.
