This book will do for consumer advocacy what the Wealthy Barber did for investors!

Across the country police forces are doubling and tripling their fraud squads. Every other day we get email messages to be on the alert about one scam or another. There is no doubt that consumer crime is on the rise.

Pat Foran, consumer advocate and host of CTV's Consumer Alert, has obtained refunds of thousands of dollars, been able to reverse dubious contracts and lobbied governments to review and even change legislation, through many of his investigations. He is bombarded with calls from loyal viewers requesting information on how to avoid rip-offs or get assistance recouping funds from cheats.

Now he brings to all Canadians the valuable information he has collected together in one concise and easy-to-read source. Based on real-life investigations, he covers it all - from choosing daycare, to buying insurance, to getting your car through emissions testing and much much more.

Canadian Consumer Alert will provide Canadians coast-to-coast with the information they need to protect themselves and their hard-earned cash. Foran explains what consumers should be on the lookout for, how to spot a scammer and what to do if something is not quite right. He addresses such questions as:

* How to get off mailing lists

* How to check your credit rating

* Whether or not you need a home inspection when buying a new house

* How to get a better interest rate

* Leasing your car versus buying AND many other common scams and swindles

As a consumer advocate Pat Foran fights for the rights of consumers and helps bring to light the strong products and services they deserve. In Canadian Consumer Alert he arms them with the information they need to buy smart, avoid traps and save money.

From the Publisher

This book will do for consumer advocacy what the Wealthy Barber did for investors!

From the Inside Flap

No one expects to get taken in by a scam or to pay good money for poor service or substandard goods. But how can you be sure? Will you recognize a con artist when he shows up at your door? Can you decipher the fine line between unethical and illegal practices? What are your rights as a consumer? What questions should you ask? Who do you check with if you have suspicions?

Pat Foran, award-winning journalist, consumer advocate and host of CTV's Consumer Alert, arms you with the information you need to buy smart, avoid traps and save money. With real-life examples, he emphasizes the need to read the fine print, do your homework, and check with the Better Business Bureau. And he offers hundreds of tips and warning signs that are common to the swindlers of today.

In Canadian Consumer Alert, Foran explains that being an informed consumer and an "effective complainer" is your best defence. Basing his findings on real-life investigations, he reveals that a lot of scams are actually legal. They exist because of loop-holes, common misconceptions and unscrupulous practitioners.

As a consumer advocate, Foran has obtained thousands of dollars in refunds, reversed dubious contracts and lobbied governments to review and even change legislation. Let him help you protect yourself and your hard-earned cash.
