Product Description

Product Description

During the American Civil War, Toronto, Montreal, St. Catharines and Halifax welcomed a well-financed network of Confederate spies and adventurers, bringing the war close to home with organized raids on Lake Erie and the border town of St. Albans, Vermont, where Confederate raiders were successfully defended by prominent Quebec politician J.C. Abbott, a future prime minister. Montreal’s St. Lawrence Hall Hotel had so many Confederates living there it offered mint juleps on its menu. It also afforded visits by John Wilkes Booth, who made several trips to Toronto as part of an organized plot leading up to the Good Friday 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Perhaps the most lasting impact on Canada was Sir John A. Macdonald’s conviction that strong states’ rights were “the great source of weakness,” which led to the war. That’s why Canada emerged in 1867 with a strong federal government—including an unelected Senate—which to this day fosters endless debate between the believers of federal rights and provincial rights.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly researched and enjoyable work, Feb 14 2011
By Anime Domo "Anime Domo" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Canadians In The Civil War (Hardcover)
Books on this topic are somewhat thin on the ground so Hoy's contribution is most welcome. It is hard to imagine a better introduction to the subject and the book contains a lot of information that will be surprizing to Americans and Canadians alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important book on an important subject, Feb 8 2006
By Mark Bourrie "Mark Bourrie" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Canadians In The Civil War (Hardcover)
Hoy pulls together all of the small strands of the Canadian activities in the Civil War -- the enlistment of tens of thousands of Canadians, the Canadian-based Confederate espionage system, the raids on St. Albans and Johnston Island -- and explains, in clear and elegant writing, the war's impact on both Canada and the United States. It's the best book on the subject and it fills a gap in the book collection of any Civil War specialist.

1.0 out of 5 stars Off topic, poorly written and researched, Oct 24 2005
By K Scheffler - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Canadians In The Civil War (Hardcover)
I've researched (and maintained a website about) the participation of Canadians in the American Civil War for a number of years and in all that time it never came to my attention that Claire Hoy had an interest in the subject, let alone was writing a book about it. Yet here we have it. Naturally, I read it with great interest, hoping that it would shed light on people that I hadn't been able to research or had yet to hear about. Unfortunately, this book has done no such thing. In fact, much of the book has nothing to do with Canadians who served in the war, rather deals with incidents like the Trent Affair, the St. Albans Raid--ie. events that had political repercusions in Canada. Aside from being largely off topic, the book is poorly written and the extent of his research appears to have been consulting ten or so books and the Internet. Overall, this book is a major disappointment. I'd strongly recommend Wink's The Civil War Years for a more thorough and articulate discussion on the political aspects of relations between Canad and the United States during the period. As for a comprehensive study on Canadians who participated in the war, evidently that book has yet to be written.
