Product Description

From Amazon.com

This 1982 effort at adapting John Steinbeck's Sweet Thursday and Cannery Row is barely watchable, salvaged only by the thoughtful performances of Nick Nolte as a marine biologist and Debra Winger as a drifter. David S. Ward (Down Periscope) made his directorial debut and thoroughly botched such essentials as pacing and verisimilitude. (The sets look as artificial as any of Francis Ford Coppolla's more egregious contrivances.) If you can stay with it, however, there are plenty of good acting moments to hang your hat on. --Tom Keogh

Absolutely one of my all time favorite movies. I love every bit and piece of it and have never understood why so few people know of it or why it wasn't a bigger hit. Funny, heart warming, and a bit off beat. Love the narration, the music, the acting, the characters, and the "boys". I really, really want this movie on DVD. As someone else wrote, every once in a while you gotta put this movie on and get your fix.

5.0 out of 5 stars CONTACT MGM to request CANNERY ROW on DVD Feb 26 2008

Format:VHS Tape
THIS IS WHAT I SENT MGM:
===========================

Since DVDs have been on the market, every place I have ever seen them on sale, I have ALWAYS looked for the 1982 MGM classic "CANNERY ROW" because is one of my all time favorite movies, for all of the reasons enumerated by all the other 49 reviews listed on AMAZON.

I understand that the critics panned it back in the day. That's been known to happen to extremely good movies before, take for example "It's A Wonderful Life" -- which finally turned a profit due to video sales-- DECADES after being a box office bomb.

I never bought CANNERY ROW on VHS, largely because I never saw it for sale on VHS, living in the wilds of Canada. However in the brave new world of the internet and Amazon it is now possible for even those of us who are isolated to acquire the merchandise we truly value.

Having read all the other reviews on AMAZON, the consensus seems to be that virtually all of the people who have posted reviews REALLY loved the movie, and most everyone wants to see CANNERY ROW released on DVD.

It is only today on Amazon that I even discovered that CANNERY ROW was even released on videotape. So for the first time right now I could buy a USED copy of it. But personally, I am rather tired of buying movies on video only to have to buy them again on DVD. So I am no longer buying VHS. I want to buy CANNERY ROW on DVD.

It is obvious that those of us who like this movie REALLY like it-- and we are certain to rush out and purchase the thing the moment it is released. So the question is: WHEN are you releasing it?

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'cult classic' Feb 16 2013

Ignore the "Product Description". This is a quirky, surreal and delightful exploration of small-town relationships in economic hard times. I don't often watch movies more than once, but have owned the VHS version since the early 80s and have watched it dozens of times (yes, I still own a VCR!).

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a Classic, but a lot of fun, GREAT SOUNDTRACK
Debra Winger is very alluring. Nick Nolte is good. I wish there was more of the supporting cast, particularly Emmet Walsh. John Huston narrates, so there's that wonderful voice. Read more

Tom Keogh's review blew it on this one. At the top of my favorites for all time. I'll admit the story line is a bit predictable. I won't admit that the pacing is weak. Read more

I would like to know why this is not available on DVD. It's a great movie and would be much better in that format. I do not care that it looks like it was filmed mostly on a set. Read more
