5.0 out of 5 stars Precise Info Dec 8 2011
Format:Paperback
A very good guide, Canon should include this book with the camera when purchased. I have owned many cameras through the years and have spent a lot of time searching the manual (perhaps I am a bit dense). With this book you end up thinking, "so that how that works".

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful book! Aug. 1 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a really useful book for anyone wanting to understand how to properly use their 7D. Even if most of the book focuses on stills, the info is really useful when starting to shoot video. I had exposition issues when filming on a chroma screen, but now understand better how my camera operates, so I can create beautiful quality videos.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well-written and good for beginners, not for advanced users though Sept. 1 2010
By C. Tipton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really like how this book is written. It is easy to understand and has some very useful information that is presented clearly and in a much more straightforward manor than a majority of other photography books I have read. That's the good part. What I did not particularly like about the book is that it is very basic and presents very little specific information about the Canon 7D.

Perhaps it was my own expectations of what the book should be that formed my negative opinion, but I really felt that if I bought a book about the 7D, there should be much more specific information about the 7D. Instead, about 80% of the book could have been written for any camera. I was hoping to see more information about when to use some of the great advanced features this camera has, but very few are touched on. Instead, much of the book goes into how to get the right exposure, frame good shots, etc...

Some of the book does go into the controls of the 7D and how to get certain settings, which I enjoyed, but that portion is small compared to the other non-7D specific areas of the book. Much of the information presented is how to shoot specific pictures, such as landscape, sports, portraits, etc... and segments of those chapters do go into ways the 7D can help you on those particular shoots, but again, only small segments. The large majority still seems to be generic advice you would find in almost any DSLR photography book.

Some of the info is very good and well described, but just not exactly what I was looking for. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to someone who wants a brief introduction to DSLR photography and wants to learn more about capturing certain shots. Just be forwarned that this isn't for more experienced users, unless you want a nice review. It's somewhat difficult to wade through all the "remember to charge your battery and format your memory card" type advice to find the real useful information (of which there is actually a good amount in this book). I really didn't expect such a beginner book for such an advanced camera though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware the Kindle Version Nov. 7 2010
By Robert Fleming - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased the Kindle edition and agree that the author has annotated all of the book's photos with tiny typographic callouts and (apparently) helpful hints that, unfortunately, are completely illegible on the Kindle version. When an image/caption is viewed in-line, these callouts are simply too small to be read. When you click the photo to enlarge the image/caption, the resolution is inadequately low and the typographic callouts are simply a blur.

Very, very unfortunate.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For 7D Owners Sept. 11 2010

Photo Book Review - Canon 7D: From Snapshots to Great Shots

Review by Scott Bourne

I think I am pretty sure that I received one of the first production Canon 7D models sold in the USA. I received the camera at Photoshop World last year in Vegas. In the one year that this camera has been available I have shot video and stills on it and think it's an amazing piece of gear.

At the same time I got my camera, Nicole Young (who occasionally guest posts here at Photofocus) got hers. She was tapped to write the Canon 7D book for Peachpit and all I can say is, WOW!

This book should be considered required reading for any Canon 7D owner. I am not just saying that because I have spent time mentoring Nicole. I am saying it because I know how hard she works, how thorough she is and how dedicated to photography she is.

Reading a camera manual is usually quite boring. Most people don't do it. You can replace your Canon 7D manual with this book and learn more about your camera than you realized possible and still have fun.

Nicole covers all the basics, plus she opens up the world of the advanced capabilities of this camera by discussing all of its manual and custom modes.

She covers video, low light, advanced settings and more. Now here's where this book is different. She also goes into using this camera and obtaining great images by discussing composition, focus, depth of field and more.

Nicole is an ego-less teacher who presents her material in a straight forward fashion that is easy to read.

The illustrations in this book will make your 7D much easier to understand and will help sort out all the things you really need to know to make great images with the 7D.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best investment in a photography book ever... Aug. 15 2010
By Roger Chan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I own at least 40 photography books and I found Canon 7D by Nicole Young to be the most informative and well written book with great photos that I have ever bought. It is by far my favorite. Though it is specifically about Canon 7D, she did an awesome job explaining theory of photography without too much details that will bore the normal photographers who just want to learn to shoot or take their photography to the next level. In short, Nicole did a great job explaining how to use the Canon 7D and how to take great photos once you master the photographic basics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Covers the basics, well written and inspiring Nov. 9 2010
By Jackie Schuknecht - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As someone who has followed the author through the podcast "This Week in Photo", and to a lesser extent "Photofocus" (both of which I find excellent), I became interested in purchasing this book. I think Ms Young is a technically proficient photographer, and goes back to the film days. I think the book is thoughtfully laid out and is basically geared towards the beginning photographer, and is not a manual for the 7D. I would consider myself an advanced amateur and did learn a few new things, or at least reinforced things that I knew and was reminded of them again. I really enjoyed "Poring over the Picture", which I thought was excellent, and gave you the reasoning behind the shutter speed, ISO, shooting mode selected etc. If the book were to actually cover all the functions of the 7D it would be a tome. The Canon Learning Center website would be a good starting point for more in depth tutorials covering more specific functions; autofocus, wireless flash, WFT, etc., etc.,....
I think for the beginning photographer it is a good place to start, and there are some excellent exercises to start learning more about the camera.
I like that she also mentions that the onboard flash is not very good, but can be used in a pinch. Flash is a whole other category, and maybe "The Strobist" website would be a good place to learn more about external, and wireless flash.
I think it is a good book for the beginner, and good to follow the exercises, to begin to know your camera, and equipment.
I also thought the quality of the photos was very good, and I enjoyed Nicole's "people shots".
I would recommend this to a beginning photographer.
Nicole also has a good blog, with some good photo tips for editing in Photoshop for the more advanced user.
