I needed this charger for my camcorder batteries. It was very expensive at Canon's site and at the store because let's face it, you're paying for the name. This charger is made for Canon Camcorder batteries at less than half te price as one made by Canon and works equally as well. Highly recommended product.

Works, but with a catch

This works fine for the decoded third party batteries; but for whatever reason, with the Canon brand battery that came with the camcorder, it charges, but the charge is not recognized in minutes on the camcorder. Aka - yes, it will charge the canon brand battery. But for example; if you have 22 mins of battery life left and then put it on the charger, it will charge full, but when you stick it back in the camcorder, it will still say 22 mins left. Run those minutes out and your camcorder will still run until the battery is depleted ...but as to how long that will be, who knows since once you hit 0, you can't tell how much battery life you have left.
I'm going to try depleting the canon brand battery completely then charging it on this charger again. Not sure the logic behind why that may work, but who knows. As mentioned, it works fine for third party brands, fully depleted or not; and the minutes are still recognized by the camcorder.

Smoking after 5-10 minutes

Five or ten minutes after plugging it in the charger started crackling and hissing. By the time I got it unplugged blue-gray smoke was streaming out. The charger was very hot to the touch. I will not be able to tell if the original Canon BP-809 battery I was attempting to recharge has been damaged until I get a working replacement charger.

I bought this charger for my BP-827 backup battery. I'm using it in the U.S. I've plugged in my battery to the charger, then left it charging there while I left the room. When I get back to the room, it smelled like something was burning. Immediately I've notice the charger light was off. I unplugged the charger from the power outlet took the battery out and I can smell the burning scent from the charger. The charger got fried and didn't work after that. Luckily my battery was still ok and there was no fire. First I thought it was my bad luck and got a defected charger, so I have them send me another one. Same thing happend again! Don't risk setting your house on fire. DO NOT BUY!!!
