Move over bossa nova! There's a new beat coming out of Brazil in the form of Cansei de Ser Sexy (Portuguese for "Tired of Being So Sexy"), and it's raucous. CSS consists of six 20-something São Paulistas who are injecting some international exuberance into the Seattle-based Sub Pop label. The only inkling that the group hails from the Southern Hemisphere is the smattering of Brazilian-tinged Portuguese that peppers the album, along with a barely detectable accent in lead singer Lovefoxxx's delivery. The CSS sound is far from traditional folksy world music; rather, it's a mishmash of '80s new wave, electronica, danceable beats, and cheeky lyrics (which are just a bit naughty). Think Berlin and Blondie, with a dash of Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Muffin Spencer of Brassy. This largely female group (all women except the drummer) will have you running to the dance floor in your slouchy boots and skinny jeans faster than you can say "Let's Make Love and Listen to Death from Above"--the first single from the album. --Renata Sadunas

This Brazilian six-piece - five girls, one bloke - made waves last year, prompting the re-release of this debut with some hefty major label backing.

And there's no doubt that their mash-up of disco, electro pop and indie deserves a wider audience.

It is cheeky, sexy, and very tuneful, and relishes in a confidence that opens up with the knowing, brassy stomp of "CSS Suxxx", goes on to gently diss Paris Hilton ("Meeting Paris Hilton"), and generally luxuriates in a ridiculous sense of fun and a determination to have a good time.

I had heard of this band before going to Brazil. Upon returning, wanting to still be immersed in all things Brazilian, I bought this CD without having heard it before. Not what I was expecting, but it's soooo good. Very entertaining and fresh. What I particularly like is how they don't take themselves so seriously with all of this new wave crap. Yeah it sounds like Blondie or a slew of more recent new-new-new wave/pseudo-electro bands, but it's also very punk in how it seems they've just discovered that using the word "bitch" 45 times in a song makes it edgy, or maybe not, maybe that's the whole point. Musically, it's very basic and they're not the best of musicians, but they've got a good enough knowledge of Pop music to know when they have a good hook and how to make everything sound sexy. Particular highlights are "Patins", "Alala", "Let's make love ...", "F*** of is not the only thing ..." & "Music is my hot hot sex". Check them out if you're tired of the over-pretentiousness of North American or European bands. They could definitely start a revolution, and Sao Paulo could potentially be the new "it" city. All I can say is that they are making these cold winter months a lot easier to put up with!
