Frank Capra was one of the first "star directors," artists whose personal style could bring an audience to a film, no matter who was starring in it. What does that mean? No one marketed "Casablanca" as a Michael Curtiz film, but everyone knew "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" was Frank Capra's film. That's the power of his art, and this collection shows why.
These are the films most people associate with Capra, the well-known Oscar nominees and winners from "It Happened One Night" through "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." But the most pleasant surprise was the often overlooked "American Madness," which clearly anticipated "It's a Wonderful Life" in many ways. This is a Sony/Columbia Pictures collection, so Capra's later classics aren't here. And it's a little disappointing that "Lost Horizon" isn't in this collection. But then, there's always one more film to include.
The films that are here are all worth watching. And the bonus disk's "Frank Capra's American Dream" gives a great background to Capra's career. A minor quibble is the slightly grainy quality of the transfers.
Still, it's a great collection for the money. And you probably won't find these films at the corner Video rental store, so this is the way to get them'

This combo pack of vintage movies is a winner! A couple of the movies are very difficult to find on their own. It's a perfect gift for someone who grew up in the 30's or 40's. I would highly recommend this to everyone. Even if you didn't grow up way back then, it's some of the best directing ever. A great deal!

Capra is hands down the top director of the 1930's.

Beautiful package and the 5 films speak for themselves.

A must have for anyone with any remote interest in filmmaking and storytelling.

We need more directors like him.

Another actor that can carry his own in any gendre. Frank Capra does it again and again. Not enough Academy Awards given to him. His movies are always a hit. They sure could make family movies in his era. The scrapebook is beautiful with all the great photos and facts about him and "his" life with his movies. Great buy!
