This disc has gone through several incarnations since its' original release by RCA, but it was and is a demonstration-quality production. I bought it primarily for the Mussorgsky and Dukas, but all performances are first-rate. As to Night on Bald Mountain and the Sorcerer's Apprentice, the tempos are well-chosen (some performances are just too deliberate) and the orchestra plays with real commitment. There are other versions of these pieces which one might judge the sonic equal of these (Lopez-Cobos and Kunzel on Telarc and Oue on Reference come to mind) but they lack the visceral excitement of these performances. A real sonic treat!

For the most important part i can adher to the text offering 5 stars to this record. For myself, I have heard some performances of other orchestras even live of these works. Perhaps Leningrad Philharmonic will be better, but I am not sure. Next to the ambiance, I like the combination. Cappricio is not so heavy as you might be used ton from Pjotr. This piece is on many recordings. Bolero is performed that good that one might even forget it is just an evergreen. All the pieces have their own mystery and that is well seen and done by Mata and Dallas. Pure music. No pathetic things .
