(Almost) Perfection!!!!!,
This review is from: Captain Canuck: The Complete Edition (Paperback)
Forget the Captain Canuck hardcovers, THIS is THE volume to get, people! Sized like a regular TPB with the thickness of an IDW Omnibus, all the issues as stated in the description are presented here, including the first issue of Legacy 1.5, with smaller depictions of covers at the end of the book of the subsequent series' that never took off. By the way the cover pictured is not the cover of the edition, but I prefer the actual for better capturing the true art style. The lack of a fifth star in my rating is only due to the lack of Catman backup stories. BUT I give five stars for the complete nostalgia factor, having picked up many, but not all, of the issues reprinted here when I was a kid at a used book store that had used/traded comics (truly a precursor to comic book shops when newsstands were a kid's only source for superhero entertainment). And I WHOLEHEARTEDLY give five stars to the reprinting of the colors. Having leafed through one of the hardcover volumes in a book store, I found the rich, deep coloring I'd remembered as a kid just didn't reproduce on the glossy paper like the newsprint-type paper of the original comics. But the paper in this volume (although still great quality thick, white stock) isn't glossy and the fantastic colors have absorbed and are a sight to behold. Buy it now if you're a fan! TRULY Canadian!

This review is from: Captain Canuck: The Complete Edition (Paperback)
YES!!!Finally, IDW (along with creator Richard Comely) did the right thing and put out a complete edition of the Captain Canuck series. Previously, IDW put out 2 volumes that only did some of the comics, as Comely planned on putting out another volume with the rest. Which he never did. Now we finally have the complete run of the original (and best!) Captain Canuck. This volume reprints #1-15 of the original series (including the 'unpublished' #15) and the Summer Special. It also reprinted the short newspaper strip and a bonus with Comely's latest Captain Canuck: Legacy #1.5 as well as a cover gallery of ALL the Captain Canuck titles over the years PLUS bonus artwork. The only thing left out are the various backup series that ran in CC. Ok, so what is all this? Captain Canuck was created by writer Ron Leishman (who left after issue #1) and artist/co-writer Richard Comely as an original canadian 'super hero', and first published in 1975 under the "Comely Comics" line. It lasted 3 issues before going under. In 1979 it came back, with the backing of "CKR Productions". They published thru issue #14 (tho #15 was finished) and a Summer Special before going under. During this time the artwork (and soon writing) was done by George Freeman. Toward the end Comely was pushed out ("Comely Comics" was dropped from the last few issues). Somehow Comely was able to retain (or regain, I have no idea) the rights to Captain Canuck and did further revisions of the character (more on this soon). In the comics, the story was set in the then future of the 1990 when Canada somehow became a world power. Captain Canuck was really an agent of CISO (Canadian International Security Organization), who had twice the strength and speed of a normal man due to an encounter with aliens. As it was set in the future, we had higher tech, including space stations and space shuttles. Initial stories pitted the Captain against supercrooks like Mr. Gold and others, before a storyline dealing with the aliens was tackled. This storyline ended with the Captain send to the 1980s, before he existed. So he started to forge a new life when no one knew of him. Sadly, the series ended. The early issues the art was rough, but things improved, especially with George Freeman. Later, Comely came up with a new Captain Canuck, totally different from the original. This he published under the "Semple Comics" line. The newspaper strip reprinted in this volume was the tail end of this work. More recently a group did a 3-issue mini-series with another version of Captain Canuck. They then wrapped up the storyline with a 4th issue. The covers are included in this volume. Most recently Comely has been trying to come out with a new comic using his newer version of Captain Canuck. The Legacy issue included in the volume is all that has been produced so far. I would have liked to have seen a reprint of all the later attempts in another volume, including the newspaper strip work and the Legacy issue, as its a different character. Oh, well. This is a great collection of an overlooked character and series. Check it out. |
