When I read this book as a young girl, it captured my imagination, and stayed brewing in the back of my mind for years. Now as a mother, I purchased this book for my son. He hasn't read it yet, but I re-read it, to see if it held the same magic as an adult. Of course things are never as shiny as one remembers them, but it is a solid book. As with many books, there are ideas and themes that I didn't recognize when reading this with a child - questions about government, war, freedom, the ethics of revenge and redemption. I hope to talk with my son after he reads the book, and draw his attention to these themes, and get his opinion on them. Even if he doesn't pick up on them, it is a great pirating adventure, filled with intrigue, mystery and gunpowder.
