From the Studio

Captain Phillips arrives on blu ray with MPEG-4 AVC 1080p 2.35:1 encode, mastered in “4K”. The transfer is pristine with exceptional contrast and clarity, marvelous depth of field, and razor sharp close-ups, that make Captain Phillips a thrilling visual experience. Facial features reveal every bruise, bead of sweat, natural line, and hair. Worn edges around the ship, weathering, imperfections in paint, beaten and well-used firearms all look marvelous. The colour palette springs to life in every daytime exterior. The blue of the sky and ocean water, the bold orange of the life vessel, and Hanks' light turquoise shirt all exude a wonderful vibrancy. Black colour is deep and rich. This is an immaculate, film-quality presentation. (5/5)
Captain Phillips’ DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio lossless soundtrack springs to life with both incredible power and environmental nuance alike. The film's earlier scenes enjoy the calm sound of passing traffic en route to the airport. Convincingly light ambience supports Phillips' arrival in the Middle East. Out on the water, the little detailed effects of waves, wind, and small background elements on the bridge place the listening audience in the ship's central location. The pirate attacks enjoy tremendous sonic intensity, built around heavy splashing water, hard-pushing engines, and big, powerful music. When the lifeboat launches into the water you can feel the impact. When the pirates fire their AK-47s, the crisp rat-a-tat-tats make you jump. Amazingly, dialogue is perfectly prioritized; not a single word is lost and each line is crystal clear. This soundtrack deservedly is nominated for 2 Oscars: Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.Read more ›
Except that is not exactly what happened, and we now have a gripping movie telling the true story of what happened to Captain Phillips.
Tom Hanks excels as the Captain, dealing with these sometimes hysterical, often irrational pirates who make unrealistic demands for money, and persist in their demands to the point of folly, with the only weapons at his disposal, his wits.
If any pirate should dare to watch this movie, they will learn a very cautionary tale about messing with American ships in International waters, and more importantly messing with the military might of the American government.
What amazed me in watching this movie was how little defense there was of the freighter given the prevalence of piracy incidents around Somalia, that enabled a large freighter ship to be taken over by only four pirates. How four pirates were able to actually to get this ship is a wonder to behold. If enhanced defensive measures were available perhaps these events could have been avoided.
There is no Captain Jack Sparrow, no peg legs, no pieces of eight, or bottles of rum in this movie. What we have instead is the gritty reality of piracy, and pirates, and the sense that human life has no value to them.
What I like about Captain Phillips, is that he is in his element, and in control of his ship. The pirates are never able to get control, because the crew is dispersed and hidden, and without arms yet able to resourcefully counter the pirates attempts.Read more ›
Don't get me wrong, the acting was top notch and deserves recognition. However, I do not enjoy every well acted film. The film itself brings no new revelation to what happened in the incident. Indeed, if anything the film towed the administration's line and ignored controversial details that have since emerged, like "what happened to the money?" and the alleged multiple shots that were fired into each pirate, including those done after boarding the boat.
This is a nice white bread action flick you can take your family to go see. 3 1/2 stars

I'm not sure what I expected when I bought this movie. I figured it would be enjoyable but slow paced, with a bit of action thrown in here and there. Read morePublished 10 days ago by Bob
Really neat movie and really interesting to watch. Not much scenery in this movie so it relies on the acting and the script which is the sign of a great movie that keeps you... Read morePublished 4 months ago by C. Soroc
