A Review by Paul McShane, "Good News, Etc." June 2007, Aug 24 2007
By Roger E. Vanderwerken - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Captain's on the Bridge (Paperback)
Picture, if you will, the world's mightiest man-of-war, with her crew complement of over 5,000, knifing through the azure blue waters off Point Loma headed into harm's way at the center of one of the most powerful and deadly battle groups ever assembled in history. She is the mighty and magnificent nuclear carrier USS Ronald Reagan, whose home port is San Diego.
Any time the captain of the ship arrives at any given location aboard ship, his presence is announced. The very title of this book from the Selah Publishing Group gives the reader a hint of what to expect. Captain's on the Bridge, simply lets everyone know their leader is in place and is in active "hands on" command. The subtitle then tells us what else to look for. And, in my case, reeled me in like a fish at the end of a line. "The Book of Revelation from a Military Perspective." From the beginning I had two questions: 1. Who was this writer that he would tackle the final and perhaps most challenging book in the Bible and; 2. Address it from a military perspective?
An ordained Baptist minister as well as a Navy chaplain, Roger Vanderwerken holds a bachelor of science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy as well as a master of divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary and a master of theology from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkley.
This is perhaps the most concise breakdown of the Book of Revelation I have ever read. The chaplain, through his use of military terms, structures and comparisons -- as well as copious footnotes that make his points crystal clear -- takes a lot of the confusion out of this oft times perplexing last book of the Bible.
At one point, for example, he even compares Gen. Douglas MacArthur's famous promise to the Philippine people of, "I shall return." To Our Lord's promise of resolution and redemption upon His return at the "end of days."
Let me emphasize that while this is a very studious book, it is not a hard book. The chaplain has done a masterful job of explaining the Book of Revelation so that the average reader can take away a more profound understanding of this mystery-riddled text.
Captain's on the Bridge is a book that's going onto my reference shelf and one to which I'm sure I'll be turning to again and again.
