I hate exercise. I hate the word, I hate doing it, and I especially hate having it invade my home in the form of some innocuous DVD package. Particularly, as is the case for many exercise DVDs I've encountered, when the choreography is unnecessarily complex, requires special tools or equipment, and needs more room than a smallish-sized living room will allow. (Hey, we don't all live in giant, lavishly-equipped studios, you know? Or have excellent bodily co-ordination for that matter...) But more than all of that, I hate zippy little instructors -- you know the kind, 5'1, blonde pigtails, an Australian accent, and abs you could grate cheese on -- chirping at me while effortlessly performing the same steps which leave me stumbling, sweating, breathless, and generally undignified. No thank you.
Then along came Carmen's DVDs. Particularly this one, which is the best workout (of the first three) and the least embarrassing were a roommate to walk in on you doing it. ;-) The tools it needs are a normal chair, and a normal mat. That's it. The exercises are simple, but diverse enough to be both interesting and challenging. There is NO bouncing around, which means for us chestier girls that you dont have to worry about jimmying yourself into that sports bra. The workouts are customizeable, and can be anywhere from 5 minutes to the whole disc long (45min? More?). Lastly, your main instructor (some muscly guy named Scott) is positive enough to keep one encouraged, but not sadistically saccharine like our aforementioned friend, Chirp-ette.
This is not a stripping disc, this is a workout disc. While Scott is the main instructor, Carmen is right beside him as our emotional support. At one point, as he's about to make a routine more difficult by "adding the leg", she protests, "No, not the leg!!" It makes me smile every time -- it's nice to know that not everyone with bods as cute as Carmen's are insane fitness aficionados. And frankly, THAT is exactly the kind of encouragement I need to keep exercising.
