From Amazon.com

André Previn's 1975 EMI recording of Carmina Burana sounds better than ever in this new transfer. The analog tape hiss has been tamed, yet there's more "air" between the notes and a greater sense of dynamic and timbral definition. Engineering-wise, the mid-70s were golden years for EMI, and the rhythmic verve, dramatic momentum, and unbuttoned joy that Previn and his brilliant forces project still pack a sonic wallop. The soloists especially are outstanding. Thomas Allen navigates Orff's cruelly high tessitura with no effort, and Sheila Armstrong wraps her warm, flexible pipes around "In trutina mentis dubia" to moving effect. Gerald English gives just the right character to the roasted swan's lament, without overly exaggerating. In short, this performance surpasses Previn's live Vienna Philharmonic remake for DG, and ranks with Shaw (Telarc), Dorati (Decca), Blomstedt (Decca), Ormandy (Sony), Muti (EMI), and Mata (RCA) among the best recordings on disc of Carl Orff's pre-minimalist masterpiece. --Jed Distler

3.0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory but not the best, Nov 7 2003

I admit I'm not an expert but happened to listen to various recordings of the Carmina Burana due to professional purposes. Andre Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra should be appealing to classical fans; however the tempos are deliberately altered to a slow and smooth flow that they no longer '''shock''' my ears. Excitements from some hollywood scripts even exceeded my expectation from this album. Try it if you are going for the name. IMO I would sincerely recommend a different recording, such as Eugene Jochum's.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best recording, May 2 2003

While doing research for my Master's dissertation which was on Carmina Burana, I did a comparative study of several Carmina Burana recordings: this one in my opinion was among the worst. While the singing and orchestral playing is very solid, the tempos are largely too slow to capture the intensity of emotion expected by modern audiences of this peice, having heard it excerpted by so many Hollywood films. Previn's approach to conducting somehow seems to remove a lot of the excitement and lustre of this incredible composition: I strongly recommend a different recording, such as Levine or Eugene Jochum.

5.0 out of 5 stars From 1975 and still sounds brilliant!, Mar 3 2003

I am not a fan of choral music, but this piece is very pleasing. The audio quality is perfect, so you have no distractions to remove you from the wonderous images that fill your mind with the slightest close of your eyes. If you are looking for a CD to glide you out from your seat with its smooth vocals, while the instruments blend into the background, this is my release recommendation.
