5.0 out of 5 stars Great Christmas present!, Oct 13 2006
By Ane Mulligan "V.P./Sr. Editor, Novel Rocket" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Carol for Christmas (Hardcover)
Trust Robin Lee Hatcher to bring us an early Christmas present! At first, I thought perhaps this was a retelling of the old story of the wife who cuts her hair off to make a watch fob for her husband's pocket watch, and the husband sells his watch to buy his wife combs for her hair. Wrong. This is a new story of sacrificed dreams, of love, and one of faith and restoration.

I'm in awe at how Hatcher can build such deep characterization into a short novella. In tune with Carol from the beginning, I hurt for her less-than-fulfilling marriage. Yet, who among us hasn't like Jonathan, desired the approval of their father? And when offered a chance to use the gift God bestowed upon her, shouldn't Carol leap at it? Methinks I would.

A perfect ending, albeit not what I expected, rounds off this memorable tale. So when November 10th arrives, run--don't walk--to your nearest bookstore to buy A Carol for Christmas. And don't forget to purchase a couple of extras. They'll make wonderful Christmas gifts.

5.0 out of 5 stars REFRESHING AND POWERFUL LOVE STORY, Jan 25 2007
By Heather Ivester - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Carol for Christmas (Hardcover)
It's time to curl up by the fire with a cup of cocoa and enjoy some heart-warming romance. This beautiful novella can be read in one quiet evening, taking you to Boise, Idaho, set in the late 60s. Hatcher says she got the idea for the story based on her own difficulties in early marriage as a teenage bride.

Going against their parents' wishes, Carol and Jonathan are newlyweds, struggling with too many bills to pay and not enough time to be together. Both have dreams: Carol is an accomplished singer and longs to make a debut in Nashville, and Jonathan is a rising manager in his family's retail business. Will their love withstand all the obstacles that threaten to tear them apart?

Unlike our modern culture which encourages people to live together before marriage, A Carol for Christmas is a refreshing and powerful love story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Christmas Story, Nov 24 2009
By Janalyn Voigt "WaySinger" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Carol for Christmas (Hardcover)
Carol gives up her dream of a music career when she drops out of college to marry Johnny Burke. But she's not alone in making sacrifices. Johnny also drops out of college in order to provide for his new wife. As a result, he enters his father's real estate empire at a lower level than he would have had he stayed in college and finished his business degree.

While Johnny scrambles to prove himself to his workaholic Dad, working long hours himself, Carol keeps the home fires burning. But as she waits night after long, lonely night for her weary husband's return, Carol begins to question if this is the life she wants. To make matters worse, Johnny has crushed her guitar under the tires of his truck, and they can't afford to replace it.

An opportunity arises for Carol to realize the dream she gave up, putting her marriage and her faith in God to the test. A Carol for Christmas resolves in a heartwarming affirmation of the power of love.

The short length of this novella is perfect for holiday reading. Despite its brevity, the characters and setting are well-detailed and believable, a testament to the story-telling ability of author Robin Lee Hatcher. I found the resolution a little pat, but the characters were likable enough to keep me reading. If you want a feel-good book to consume with your eggnog, you can't go wrong with A Carol for Christmas.
