"Jude Deveraux's writing is enchanting and exquisite...."

-- BookPage

"Deveraux's touch is gold." -- Publishers Weekly

Product Description

New York Times bestselling author and "master storyteller" (Literary Times) Jude Deveraux uncovers the passions and scandals that take a small town by storm when two cousins switch lives.Ariel and Sara never imagined their high-spirited attempt to step into each other’s shoes would cause such upheaval. The lifelong pen pals, who look exactly alike, meet for the first time in their twenties and embark on a daring adventure of changing identities. Southern belle Ariel is determined to win the heart of a man who doesn’t know she exists, while Sara yearns to leave behind her hardscrabble existence and taste the good life that fate has denied her. But in pretty Arundel, North Carolina, nothing is as it seems—including the dangers that are closing in on their new dream lives, as the deepest of fears and darkest of secrets and betrayals come to light.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, Feb 5 2006
By
This review is from: Carolina Isle (Paperback)
This is an easy read novel with little true mystery but a nice story all the same. I've read nearly all of Ms. Deveraux's novels and tend to have a love-hate feeling to them. There are those that I simply can't stand and one or two that I simply love. Most fit somewhere in the middle, often merging together in my memory and meaning little to me really. This novel will most likely end up in the middle group when it comes to looking back on it some time later. I like it, but it will never fit among my favorite novels.

In her obvious desire to get away from seeming to fit in with more tawdry romance novels, Ms Deveraux has chosen to leave out the sexier parts of the two romances in this novel. In the case of one of these couples, I can't help feeling that the missing scene could have been the most emotional part of the story as a whole and I'm sorry it is left to our imaginations to wonder exactly how Sara and R.J. went from smart-cracking employee-employer with secret fears and desires for one another to engaged lovers.

The story of identical/near-identical women switching places is not new to Ms. Deveraux's stories but the fact that the switch failed miserably kept it from being stale from the start. And it is refreshing to see that no Montgomery/Taggart man is in sight; though I love them dearly I can't help thinking they've had far too much time in the sun already.

1.0 out of 5 stars Jude, Jude, what were you thinking?, Feb 7 2006
By K. Richardson "kari" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Carolina Isle (Paperback)
I usually love Jude Deveraux's books. A few of her books are amoung my all time favorite. Now, that said, I don't know what happened here. The story was implausible by any standards, there was little to no chemistry between both couples. I didn't know why any of them liked each other.

Did Jude have writer's block? Someone kidnap her name? It seemed like someone else ghost wrote it or she was up against a deadline with only a vague idea and no time to think the story out. The only character in the book I found interesting was a 15 year old boy that she wrote as though he was 23. Skip this one and read any of her older works

2.0 out of 5 stars Jude, what the heck happened???, Jan 6 2006
By C. Carlson - Published on Amazon.com

Wow. What can I say about this one?? How about rushed to print, undeveloped characters, strange and screwy plotline, abrupt ending, . . .

I have been a Jude Deveraux fan for a long time, and I have most, if not all of her books. This one was a disappointment, to say the VERY least!!!

I am giving it two stars solely for the author. Written by anyone else, it would get no stars at all. She desperately needs to rewrite this one, this time increasing the depth of the characters and the plot, and changing the ending so that it ends with more than a ''Huh, what??''!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars How could this book be by THE Jude Deveraux?????????, Jan 5 2006
By Jane Patterson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Carolina Isle (Paperback)
I kid you not, I looked at the cover of this book, front and back, more than once, to make sure it was REALLY written by my favorite romance author, Jude Deveraux. This book was SOOOOOOO disappointing. It had no character development, no witty banter and dialogue, and a thrown together undeveloped plot. I felt like it was written by a schoolgirl! Maybe it's a book she wrote when she was a teen and they decided they just HAD TO publish it? I can't believe it was so bad. I'm so crushed. I just reread "Rememberance" again the other day and enjoyed it so much...but then to read this and be so disillusioned! I hope "First Impressions" is better...I just bought it and if it's as bad as Caroline Isle...well, I won't be paying for hardbacks any more, I can certainly tell you that!!
