From the acclaimed creators of TOY STORY, THE INCREDIBLES and FINDING NEMO comes a high-octane adventure comedy that shows life is about the journey, not the finish line. Enjoy Pixar's landmark classic on both Disney Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD in this sensational 2-Disc Combo Pack. Hotshot rookie race car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is living life in the fast lane until he hits a detour on the way to the most important race of his life. Stranded in Radiator Springs, a forgotten town on the old Route 66, he meets Sally, Mater, Doc Hudson (Paul Newman) and a variety of quirky characters who help him discover that there's more to life than trophies and fame. Revved up with a sensational soundtrack, the ultimate in picture and sound and hours of exciting bonus features, CARS fires on all cylinders in this Blu-ray and DVD pack!
There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. The best thing about Cars, and what many kid's movies lack, is the abilty for very young kids to watch it. It doesn't really have a "bad guy" that would scare a very young child like most of the original Disney movies and some of the new Pixar or Dreamworks movies. It doesn't have a heavy story like Ice Age (mother dying and child trying to be eaten). It doesn't have the violence that many of the other animated kids movies, including Pixar movies, have such as The Incredibles or Monsters Inc. Now I'm not the kind of parent that shelters their kids from this stuff. Now that she's 3 1/2 she watches almost all of the movies I just mentioned. It's just nice to have a movie like cars that doesn't need a lot of explaining or screening.

So why this first Cars movie? Because it's the ideal family movie. It has lots of action at the beginning and ending for the teeny crowd with the cutest little cars you will ever see for your girls and lots and lots of slam bang racing action for your boys. While for mommy and daddy, the center part is a very nostalgic look at what happens when a very talented but also very conceited young racing car is forced to slow down and realize that it's not about the destination; but actually how you get there! And for grandpa and grandma it's a nostalgic trip down memory lane to a time before expressways and Wi-Fi when getting there was an adventure in itself! In other words this is a movie that if given a chance can appeal to all ages!
The animation is crisp and clear with poster bright colours. Even the slipcover of the combo pak is bright and glossy. While the Bluray version of this 2:39.1 widescreen movie brings out all the fine details lavished on it by Pixar. Racing cars go thundering by, crowd scenes are very well defined and the beauty of the desert is brought out in all it's muted glory. Plus fully animated ending credits and even an epilogue at the very end. Definitely one of their better works visually.
Audio is an English 5.1 Dolby True HD with EX back channel encoding backed up by Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks in English, French and Spanish. They all sound fine but I prefer the True HD which really gives a remarkable immersive experience especially during the racing scenes.Read more ›
Lightning McQueen is an arrogant race car who gets stuck in a really tiny small miniscule pint-sized town in the middle of the desolate dessert. He has to complete some community service work before he can leave and compete in the BIG RACE. While stuck in this little hamlet, will Lightning learn some very important lessons?
I cannot saw all that much here except that Mater is one of the funniest Pixar characters in years. Mater gets his own short later on. Mater needs his own series. Buzz Lightyear got one, why not Mater?
One of the biggest screen legends of all time (see Cool Hand Luke and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof) marks his final role here playing the town mayor Doc Hudson. All the grace and power of that has made Newman the star he is shines in every line he utters, every syllable he breathes. Pixar scored a coup with this talent.
Cars will definitely rev your engines with pulse pounding action and excitement. You will laugh and smile and feel warm all over. And you will want to give your own car a little hug as well. Go ahead, your car won't mind.
