Format: Paperback
I was sad to reach the final chapter, the here and now, in this most marvelous, intelligent and humorous history of the universe. I have copies of the entire set, for each of my sons, when they, in time, wish to look back and wonder where the world has been. Larry Gonick is well-deserving of every award he receives for the series, and sadly, for catching us up to the present, with this final volume. The bibliographies have been particularly welcome back roads to follow or to see where the author has traveled. The humor in the final volume remains a fine open wit and chooses wisely not to rile foreign sensibilities, a self-mocking American man of letters, and great cartoon script.

Larry Gonick has a wonderful talent for making history make sense. His concise summary of historic events, while maintaining proper perspective for the "audience," reminds me of Mark Twain's "lectures." You will laugh at the ridiculousness of the human race.

All his "Cartoon History" books are essential tools for understanding the history of our world. Funny and often irreverent, it makes you want to learn more - which is the ultimate compliment for any author/artist of historic chronicles.

A definite MUST HAVE! :-)

Gonick finishes his 30-year masterpiece Oct. 8 2009

I first read Gonick's original volume of this series - The Cartoon History of the Universe Volume 1 - back in the early 90's as a teenager. Since then I have kept up with each of the new volumes, so it was with both great excitement and a little sadness that I finally cracked open this final volume.

This volume does not disappoint. Gonick keeps up the fast paced run through of history that we have come to expect in the books, covering from the 1700's all the way through 9/11 and today.

Finally getting up to a century that I know well - the one we were all born in - it was interesting reading his take on events that I actually knew in great detail. There were a few things that I was bummed were left out - though planes start appearing in panels, the beginnings of flight are not covered. While Sputnik is mentioned and ICBMs, the space race is not covered. However, knowing Gonick's work as well as I do, I know this wasn't due to any ignorance or forgetfulness on the author's part - he simply could not put everything in.

As I said before, fans can rejoice because this volume is no different than the others. It is more of the same wonderful history and cartoons fans have come to expect.

Another entertaining, educational gem... Oct. 15 2009
By Deygan Brendan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The only thing I found disappointing about this final volume in Gonick's classic Cartoon Histories was the fact that it he hadn't made it a couple hundred pages longer by being more detailed about certain periods - but that only emphasizes how much fun these books are to read.
Another brilliantly-written and drawn chronicle that you'll want to read again and again over time.

A Treasure as Always Oct. 8 2009
By C. Carter Holland - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I've probably read Gonick's "Cartoon History" series at least a dozen times now. It's a brilliant refresher on the history of our world. It's straight forward, entertaining and informative. The ONLY complaint I could levy at Mr. Gonick's work is that the last few pages seemed rushed. I feel that his modern world series would have benefited from being delivered in 3 volumes rather than 2.

Thank you Mr. Gonick for this awesome series!

A Little History is a FunnyThing! Nov. 3 2012
By Anne Preciado Rich - Published on Amazon.com

Ever since I moved to a small town that doesn't offer a morning paper with comics page that I can read at breakfast, I've had to find an alternative...Larry Gonick's entire series of Cartoon Histories has done a superb job of filling this gap! So much better than the selection of comics in the local newspaper and educational too...It's good to get a broad overall picture of history because it makes you realize that most of the stuff going on in this day and age, isn't really all that bad--at least, compared to what we crazy humans have done in the past!...Mr. Gonick teaches history with a light and humorous touch. When you think about it--aren't we all just living in our own personal cartoons? Well done, Mr. Gonick!!![...]

Loved it April 24 2012

Really, the only negative thing I can say about this is that I'm very sad the series had to come to an end. Excellent, informative and a good sense of humor.
