From the Inside Flap

In Planning Better Board Meetings, John Carver examines how to restrict crowded agendas, scattered focuses of discussion, and all the familiar weaknesses of group discipline—and use board energy efficiently and effectively. He tells how to select subject matter for meetings, how to plan use of board time, control the agenda, and discusses how long a board meeting should be in order to fulfill its task of governing. In this Carver Guide, you will learn how to:
  • Choose subject matter for meetings taking into account short term demands and long term needs
  • Avoid de facto "rubber stamping" of board decisions
  • Set board agendas that are truly the board's agenda, and not those of the individual
  • Determine the length of meetings to adequately fulfill the board's task
  • Solicit divergent input, yet resolve it into a single point

1.0 out of 5 stars Just Not Worth the Money, Aug 31 2006

This review is from: CarverGuide, Planning Better Board Meetings (Paperback)
The title implies far more than you'll get from this "book". In reality it is 18 fairly small pages of generic information such as "ensure that the board is dealing with board topics". As a free pamphlet given away at the SBA it would be fine, but not for the money asked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical resource, Sep 16 2009

This review is from: CarverGuide, Planning Better Board Meetings (Paperback)
Concise and an excellent hand out for Board Members. Need to read John Carver's Book first - and then use these resouces as a summary and a practical guide to implementing the model. changes board meetings from reactive approval based activities to fulfilling a leadership role - but it takes a lot of discipline and these short guides help to keep Board members on track and commited to working a the new model. Excellent and well written
