Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

This album is part of the series devoted to classic film music recorded by Charles Gerhardt in the 1970s and early 80s. Most albums featured particular composers but several concentrated on music written for the great Hollywood stars. There are albums for Errol Flynn, Bette Davis and this musical tribute to Humphrey Bogart, centred on a suite of Max Steiner's endlessly evocative music from Casablanca. Gerhardt brilliantly distils the essence of the classic wartime romance, capturing the most famous, timeless moments, before presenting music from a further 11 of the star's films. In fact the album is almost as much a homage to Steiner as Bogart, for he scored seven of the 12 featured films, and makes a particularly powerful impression with suites from Key Largo and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The much under-rated composer Frederick Hollaender is represented by Sabrina, followed by Victor Young's memorably moving love theme from The Left Hand of God and Miklós Rózsa's fiery "Main Title" from Sahara. Finally, there are two films scored by Franz Waxman: To Have and Have Not leads to a superbly crafted suite of his intensely dramatic music for The Two Mrs. Carrolls. With excellent sound, fine performances and informative notes, the album is ideal for anyone with a love of the classic sound of Hollywood.--Gary S. Dalkin

as a rabid fan of Casablanca I almost died of joy when I received the soundtrack as a Christmas gift...and then this experience was repeated the first time I played it. The soundtrack, like the film, is absolutely perfect. fans of both music and Casablanca, and indeed good film in general, will adore this.

5.0 out of 5 stars As Time Goes By...and other standards, Sep 21 2003

Of all the soundtrack recordings I own, this is the most unusual. Yes, it features Max Steiner's score and the various vocal renditions of standards as we saw and them in Rick's Cafe Americain...including Herman Hupfeld's "As Time Goes By." And although this isn't the first soundtrack to incorporate dialog from the film, it's the only one I have ever owned in this format.

The score by composer Steiner is reminiscent of his music for a movie also set in French North Africa (Algiers), with melodies and rhythms that evoke the desert and alien cultures of the region. Interpolating the French national anthem and (reluctantly) As Time Goes By, as well as snippets of Germany's national anthem, Steiner's music sets the tone for the conflict both out in the wider world at war and in Rick Blaine's disillusioned heart.

Adding punch and poignancy to Steiner's score are recordings of "Dooley" Wilson, the Warner Bros. Orchestra, and pianist Elliot Carpenter (the real ivories-tickler behind "Sam Waters'" playing) as they performs such wonderful numbers as "Knock on Wood," "It Had To Be You," "The Very Thought of You," "Frenesi," and, of course, the incomparable "As Time Goes By." And as a bonus, Casablanca fans will be thrilled to hear many of the great lines from the movie, spoken by Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, and other cast members. Some of these exchanges will make you smile, others will make you mist up. Others will help you settle bets ("See, no one in the movie ever, ever says, 'Play it again, Sam.'").

5.0 out of 5 stars You can see the movie through the Music., Nov 11 2001
This review is from: Casablanca (Audio CD)
Max Steiner was one of the early film music composers who did most of his music work for Warner brothers. He was very prolific in his music scores and Casablanca saw him score some of the best music ever for film. This soundtrack includes everything from the song "As Time Goes By", to the French National Anthem and you will remember key scenes in the movie when each new theme is played. Great Music, Great Movie.
