Real-life cases for the surgery clerkship and shelf-exam

"Overall, this is a useful book for anyone preparing for the surgical clerkship exam or needing review prior to the USMLE. The information is presented concisely and clearly and the questions at the end of each section reinforce the most important information. The addition of new cases and revision of previous cases make it a worthwhile update. 3 Stars."--Doody's Review Service

Review

"This is intended to emphasize the principles to be applied in managing general surgery patients. For a student who is in a rush to prepare for a particular case or problem, this is a good way to become knowledgeable quickly. It follows the medical student objective format as put forth by the boards and accreditation agency, using problem-based cases which tie together symptoms and signs with a disease. It is a well done book and certainly accomplishes its goal of providing students with a large amount of information about a particular type of problem. 3 Stars."--Doody's Review Service (Doody's 20081222) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for surgery clerkship Dec 3 2006
By B. NH
Format:Paperback
This is the first case files book I have used and I was pleasantly surprised. It presents each chapter as a case and you can work through the diagnosis, management and prognosis. Enforces active learning and has questions to test your knowledge. Each case highlights the most important aspects of common surgical cases without excess fluff. Great for oral exams and the American shelf exam. Not enough for pimping (Surgical Recall is helpful for that) but it covers the basics.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for learning, not for Shelf Mar 30 2008
By TN30 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I agree with one of the other reviewers that this book contained a lot of interesting cases, but it was not particularly helpful for the shelf. I had 3 questions that were straight out of this book, but the vast majority of the questions can't be answered using this as a resource. I had a lot of heme/lab values on my test and 4-5 ethical questions where i felt at least three answers seemed quite reasonable. I don't really know how to study for those- they were situations that I never encountered on the wards or in lectures. I think a medicine review book probably would have been more helpful for most of the surgery shelf.

One more thing, for that guy who posted about "70% of questions" from the shelf being in this book, he also had that same quote about the OB/GYN case files. I think he's wrong on both counts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not up to par with the rest of the series. Jun 28 2007
By Frijolero - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Though this book remains one of the best surgery shelf prep books out there, it does not include as much of the shelf content as I had hoped. Be sure to supplement with another book as using this as your primary source will leave you scratching your head at many shelf questions.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not relevant to shelf exam May 30 2009
By T. Man - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Good if you just want to learn surgery related information. Bad for the shelf exam. Irrelevant information. Will make you wonder if you studied. Perhaps suitable for surgical residency pimping.
