Product Description

The most successful invigoration of a cinematic franchise since Batman Begins, Casino Royale offers a new Bond identity. Based on the Ian Fleming novel that introduced Agent 007 into a Cold War world, Casino Royale is the most brutal and viscerally exciting James Bond film since Sean Connery left Her Majesty's Secret Service. Meet the new Bond; not the same as the old Bond. Daniel Craig gives a galvanizing performance as the freshly minted double-0 agent. Suave, yes, but also a "blunt instrument," reckless, and possessed with an ego that compromises his judgment during his first mission to root out the mastermind behind an operation that funds international terrorists. In classic Bond film tradition, his global itinerary takes him to far-flung locales, including Uganda, Madagascar, the Bahamas (that's more like it), and Montenegro, where he is pitted against his nemesis in a poker game, with hundreds of millions in the pot. The stakes get even higher when Bond lets down his "armor" and falls in love with Vesper (Eva Green), the ravishing banker's representative fronting him the money.
For longtime fans of the franchise, Casino Royale offers some retro kicks. Bond wins his iconic Astin-Martin at the gaming table, and when a bartender asks if he wants his martini "shaken or stirred," he disdainfully replies, "Do I look like I give a damn?" There's no Moneypenny or "Q," but Dame Judi Dench is back as the exasperated M, who one senses, admires Bond's "bloody cheek." A Bond film is only as good as its villain, and Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, who weeps blood, is a sinister dandy. From its punishing violence and virtuoso action sequences to its romance, Casino Royale is a Bond film that, in the words of one character, makes you feel it, particularly during an excruciating torture sequence. Double-0s, Bond observes early on, "have a short life expectancy." But with Craig, there is new life in the old franchise yet, as well as genuine anticipation for the next one when, at last, the signature James Bond theme kicks in following the best last line ever in any Bond film. To quote Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin, now I know what I've been faking all these years. --Donald Liebenson

5.0 out of 5 stars Daniel Craig ... the new generation BOND! March 14 2007
By Deena
When Daniel Craig was introduced to the world as James Bond, people laughed. They booed, they jeered and they thought a blond bond would NEVER be good enough (although I never really understood why).

Now I doubt that anyone will ever laugh at Mr. Craig again. He makes Casino Royale the wonderful movie that it is. He makes it exciting, refreshing, witty. He delivers his lines with a passion that has been lacking in Bond since the good old Sean Connery days.

When they decided to refurbish the entire franchise, no stone was left unturned. They even got a Bond girl that didn't fit the traditional mold. Eva Green is beautiful, but in an unusual way. Vesper Lynd is smart, sassy, quick-witted and sarcastic. She matches James in every way and that is probably why he falls in love with her. To see their relationship grow is something I feel priviledged to have watched, and of course it makes the ending even harder to endure.

The DVD version of the movie came out March 13. It is the same version we saw in theatres. The special feature worth taking a look at is "Becoming Bond". They speak to everyone involved with Casino Royale, from the stunt men to Dame Judy Dench, along with Barbara Broccolli and Michael Wilson (producers). They discuss the controversy, the making of the film. They also talk to Craig ... Daniel Craig. Seeing Daniel in a relaxed setting discussing the role that would change his life is quite enlightening. He is funny and contemplative at the same time. He is a mature actor who has no doubts that "Becoming Bond" has lead his career on a completely different path. When he tells of his precarious boat ride right before the press conference (and what he would have done if he had fallen off), you see how seriously he takes this role.

4.0 out of 5 stars Casino Royale Delivers March 31 2007
By Steve

I was a little iffy about having a new actor (Daniel Craig) replacing Pierce Brosnan, because Pierce is the bond of my time, but after watching Casino Royale, I'm pretty glad they did.

Casino Royale brings (to me) a refreshing change in the recent line of 007 films. It's WAYY better than the awful (and forgettable) Die Another Day, which i fell asleep watching. It has the action, the humor and the affairs you'd expect in a 007 movie, a different, but good change in atmosphere because of Daniel as the new Bond.

Why didn't they make a collectors edition that offers more features? I felt the features were minimal and wanted to see more. I miss the days when dvds were loaded with special features.

Overall an amazing movie (this coming from someone who isnt a big fan of 007) and you might be pleasantly surprised watching this.

The 2nd best movie of Daniel Craig (just behind Skyfall). The Blu-ray is very good looking (1080p), the sound is amazing and it is worth every penny!

If you like James Bond, you need this movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bond back at his best! April 16 2013

Great film, Bond at its finest. Just makes me weep a tear or two when they trash Astons. And having a love interest that helps build on the next instalment is good too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new Bond! Dec 12 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I chose it because I love Daniel Craig in the Bond role. It is the best series of Bond movies up to date and I have seen them all.

I would recommend this movie (and did) to everyone I know. Loved it. Can't wait to see Skyfall.

I am not a James Bond fan, but I've seen many of them just the same. This one was quite good, mostly due to Daniel Craig's great performance. He was absolutely a great choice for the part and I hope to see him again play this part if ever they make other James Bond movies (as if they would stop...) as he has class and oh... gorgeous blue eyes! Physically, he's the most fit Bond that I can remember.

This Bond movie has a strong plot and the action scenes look brutal for once. There's a lot of action which I'm sure will please the true Bond fan.
