The most successful invigoration of a cinematic franchise since Batman Begins, Casino Royale offers a new Bond identity. Based on the Ian Fleming novel that introduced Agent 007 into a Cold War world, Casino Royale is the most brutal and viscerally exciting James Bond film since Sean Connery left Her Majesty's Secret Service. Meet the new Bond; not the same as the old Bond. Daniel Craig gives a galvanizing performance as the freshly minted double-0 agent. Suave, yes, but also a "blunt instrument," reckless, and possessed with an ego that compromises his judgment during his first mission to root out the mastermind behind an operation that funds international terrorists. In classic Bond film tradition, his global itinerary takes him to far-flung locales, including Uganda, Madagascar, the Bahamas (that's more like it), and Montenegro, where he is pitted against his nemesis in a poker game, with hundreds of millions in the pot. The stakes get even higher when Bond lets down his "armor" and falls in love with Vesper (Eva Green), the ravishing banker's representative fronting him the money.
For longtime fans of the franchise, Casino Royale offers some retro kicks. Bond wins his iconic Astin-Martin at the gaming table, and when a bartender asks if he wants his martini "shaken or stirred," he disdainfully replies, "Do I look like I give a damn?" There's no Moneypenny or "Q," but Dame Judi Dench is back as the exasperated M, who one senses, admires Bond's "bloody cheek." A Bond film is only as good as its villain, and Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, who weeps blood, is a sinister dandy. From its punishing violence and virtuoso action sequences to its romance, Casino Royale is a Bond film that, in the words of one character, makes you feel it, particularly during an excruciating torture sequence. Double-0s, Bond observes early on, "have a short life expectancy." But with Craig, there is new life in the old franchise yet, as well as genuine anticipation for the next one when, at last, the signature James Bond theme kicks in following the best last line ever in any Bond film. To quote Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin, now I know what I've been faking all these years. --Donald Liebenson

5.0 out of 5 stars Different Bond, better movie, May 27 2009

This is by far my favorite Bond movie. I forgot Paul Haggis had a hand in the script, though it does show. This movie is smarter, better structured, contemporary, while still maintaining the sense of style that made the series special, and is more interesting and better cast than any other Bond since, well, I can't remember.
For all the noise made when the news came out that Daniel Craig was to be the next Bond--I thought he was an excellent choice; I applaud the decision to reboot the series, as it was circling down the drain, with ever more ridiculous gadgets (remember the cloaked BMW in the last Brosnan outing?) and actors past their prime, or flavor of the month castings.
Loved Eva Green as Vesper Lynd -- excellent in the role, gorgeous, sophisticated, glamorous; I'm surprised she's not in more movies--I can only think of two others I've seen her in, Kingdom of Heaven (The Director's Cut) [Blu-ray], and The Golden Compass [Blu-ray], the latter with Daniel Craig again, both actors having minor supporting roles there.
There's quite a bit of additional content on the disk; some of it not so interesting--the parcour philosophy; some of it very interesting--explaining why it took so long to turn the book into a movie in the proper way. The movie by itself though is reason enough to purchase this.
As much as I loved it, I hated Quantum of Solace [Blu-ray]; such a waste of an opportunity to continue the smart, well written, well crafted reinvention of the series; instead we got a dumbed down effort, with a meaningless plot inspired by our new-found environmental concerns, a forgettable villain, a completely forgettable Bond girl, pretty explosions and not much acting; poor Daniel Craig had nothing to do but throw a 2 hour long tantrum. But wait, this is a review for Casino Royale. Loved it. Get it. It's just that Quantum made me soooo mad.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your regular James Bond movie, but quite good!, May 3 2007

I am not a James Bond fan, but I've seen many of them just the same. This one was quite good, mostly due to Daniel Craig's great performance. He was absolutely a great choice for the part and I hope to see him again play this part if ever they make other James Bond movies (as if they would stop...) as he has class and oh... gorgeous blue eyes! Physically, he's the most fit Bond that I can remember.

This Bond movie has a strong plot and the action scenes look brutal for once. There's a lot of action which I'm sure will please the true Bond fan.

I beleve since a certain time James Bond had became a gadget man instead of a girl`s man,now he`s once again got his charisma.Daniel Craig even with his blond hair does an outstanding job in the role of Bond, few actors in the Bond series played him that well. The movie is exciting from beggening to end in what proves to be one of the best Bond movie ever.
Explosions,Guns,Kills,Girls,Nemesis, this movie`s got it all.Casino Royale is based on the book of the same name and is pretty impressive. This time Bond`s ennemy is Le Chiffre who has this mysterious eye(great for poker),a very interresting character also. The movie won`t give you a break its always intense and you always know something`s coming up.
It is interrresting to know that James Bond is not a "00" right at the start.Everithing about the movie is great from beggening to end this movie i stunning, definatly a buy.
