5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read Nov. 9 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Elise Stokes does a very good job of writing YA fiction. The character development leads to believable characters you care about. Cassidy Jones could be the girl next door struggling to learn how to use superpowers. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great mystery for any age Oct. 13 2013

Although the protagonists in this book were teenagers, the book is a great read for any age. I am 54 and could not put the book down. An accident causes a teenager to develop unnatural powers and between her and a genius boy, they destroy an evil powerful man and his empire. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. I cannot imagine being disappointed in this book if you are a fan of the super-natural and mad scientists.

5.0 out of 5 stars An astonishing debut from a talented author Jan. 2 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
When I was young (gas was a whopping 32 cents a gallon), I was enthralled by the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories created by Edward Stratemeyer. I may have read every one of them. Nancy was smart, strong, and self-assured, with virtually endless resources at her fingertips--a teenaged superhero for her time. Let me assure you, Cassidy Jones is no Nancy Drew. She's smart, yes, but more importantly, she's real--a typical young girl in today's angst-ridden society, just trying to grow up and find her way. Unlike Nancy, who was seemingly ten feet tall and bulletproof, Cassidy is an accident waiting to happen.

And happen it does. With an intriguing plot that captivates from the opening line, Cassidy leaps from shy-girl to super-girl, discovering amazing new abilities and going toe-to-toe with the Bad Guys, all the while fighting her own personal battles. The story moves at a breathless pace, with superb writing and compelling storytelling. You simply have to turn the page.

Elise Stokes is a fine writer, spinning a wildly entertaining ride from beginning to end. With a supporting cast of memorable characters, Cassidy Jones And The Secret Formula leaves you wanting more. It will appeal strongly to the young adult audience, but is so well written it will appeal to a far larger (younger *and* older) group of readers. The first book in the Cassidy Jones Adventures series, this is a remarkable debut that should be on everyone's bookshelf. Which reminds me, I've got some old Nancy Drew Mysteries to dump off at the used book store--I need the space for the new kid on the superhero block, Cassidy Jones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing Adventure Dec 20 2010
By MCS - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I think what I like best about the character, Cassidy Jones, is that anyone who has lacked confidence or felt awkward or shy can sympathize with her plight. Cassidy is definitely a character in a piece of science fiction, but her very human qualities, played off against the non-human ones she develops, make this an engaging read. The story is not predictable, and her "talents" don't magically solve all of her problems and improve her life. I look forward to seeing how the author develops Cassidy and the other key characters as the series continues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Written Roller-coaster May 7 2011

Cassidy Jones and the Secret Formula is one of the most creative books that I have ever read- the depth of imagery that Elise Stokes words weave put her book on par with a graphic novel, the depth of feeling and expression and thought that is expressed is equal to some of the more classic novels.. all the while keeping it engaging for all levels- appropriate for ages of kids preteen to adult, with varying occupations and interests (I'm a 27 year old mother of two little girls with a degree in engineering and a job in graphic design! and my cousins, boys and girls, ages 13-18 love it!)
Definitely a must read!

Don't read this review - Just go buy the book, read it, and then come back and agree or disagree with my review of the book.

No, really, just go buy it.

But watch out, or you'll find yourself finishing it at 3 am like I did.

I'm warning you, if you don't leave now, there are spoilers coming.

OK, you've been warned.

This series is (sort of) about a superhero in a world without superheroes.

Cassidy Jones is not a superhero, but she has all the powers of one.

You'll find threads of 3 major Marvel heroes; I'm not going to tell you which ones.

While you'll see these traces of Marvel staples, this is not Marvel fan fic, this is solid writing, pacing, and humor.

I literally laughed out loud a couple of times in each book. These are not funny books, but there is some well placed humor in it.

There is action, and violence, and 14 year old girl's reaction to said action and violence (nice emotional conflict, and no trips to the morgue yet).

The teen angst is thankfully subdued (she REALLY screwed up with a boy less than a year ago - Cassidy can tell you exactly how many days it's been.)

My only complaint with the series is that there are only 2 books in it.

I am hopeful that the author will follow Cassidy Jones from her current age of 14 (both books) and follow her through her life.

I hope that Marvel will approach the author to do a series of graphic novels.

I'm hoping that when it becomes a movie that the film producers don't destroy it like they did with Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson.

I'm trying to figure out when to start reading these books to my little Avenger loving 8 year old daughter.

Might be today.

My kids both read Cassidy jones and the Secret Formula and loved it, so I decided to have a look for myself. I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it to others. Stokes is an awesome story-teller with great insight into the teenage mind and the character of Cassidy Jones was engaging and relatable. I look forward to the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Move over Harry Potter--Cassidy rocks! Nov. 8 2012
By Diane Rapp - Published on Amazon.com

I plan to visit my granddaughter during the Christmas holidays and stared "previewing" potential books to share with her. Imagine my surprise when I read this charming novel. It's a book that any adult would enjoy while reading to younger members of the family. Cassidy should become a superhero role model for girls in the future.

When Cassidy goes with her news reporter father to interview Professor Serena Phillips, a famous scientist, she accidentally crashes into an experiment and becomes a mutant. (She's like Spiderman crossed with Hermione from Harry Potter.) Cassidy is a regular fourteen-year-old girl who battles hormones and embarrassment in school while trying to control her enhanced skills. Complications arise when Serena disappears and then Cassidy's father is kidnapped. Luckily the scientist's son Emery shows up to help. He's got an I.Q. off the charts and knows enough about his mother's experiment to help Cassidy control her superpowers. They team up to track down the kidnappers and battle a super villain to save the world.

I'll be happy to share this exciting tale with my granddaughter! Luckily I've already bought the sequel, since I know she'll be anxious to continue the story.
