-RT Book Reviews (4 ½ stars) on Cast in Silence
"No one provides an emotional payoff like Michelle Sagara. Combine that with a fast-paced police procedural, deadly magics, five very different races and a wickedly dry sense of humor-well, it doesn't get any better than this."
-Bestselling author Tanya Huff on The Chronicles of Elantra series
"The impressively detailed setting and the book's spirited heroine are sure to charm romance readers as well as fantasy fans who like some mystery with their magic."
-Publishers Weekly on Cast in Secret

Shall not stay cast in silence about my love of this book!,
By
This review is from: Cast in Silence (Paperback)
I just finished this book and I have to say it is likely my favorite in the series thus far. Firstly we get to see the thing that I have been longing to see for so long which is Kaylin really coming into her own. Sargara has been slowly working towards this moment and for me it was worth the wait. I am not going to lie I usually like a little more romance in my books than this one provided however the book was so good I didn't even miss it. Which of course means their was no resolution in the whole nightshade Severin thing. In Cast in Silence we learn what really happened to Kaylin after she left Severin. She is drawn back into the Fief Barren where she ran after that one fateful night and pulled into a series of events that circle around one of the big mysteries in the series, that is the shadow heart in the center of the fief as well as the role of the fief lords. We meet a new character, Morse a hardened thug in the employ of the Fief Lord Barren. She is definitely an ambiguous character but a cool new addition to the gang. We get to see a lot more of Tiamaris in terms of plot and character development and without spoiling anything I will just say that its awesome. The way that the plot flows, the finish, the grand reveal, everything was intensely satisfying and although this book should be read only after the other titles in the series it stands alone as a great title. That being said the only complaint that I have lies in the fact that sometimes the critical dialogue between characters dealing with magic and secrets can at times be quite confusing. I know she is trying to not give a lot away but sometimes i don't really understand what people are talking about at all. thats all folks GOOD STUFF

Kaylin's history,
By
This review is from: Cast in Silence (Paperback)
In this installment of the Elantra series we find out more of Kaylin Neya's past and why it has come back to haunt her. Sagara makes the story telling almost seamless and very comfortable for those readers of the prior books in the series. If I could fault anything it would be the detail ridden chapter before the climax of the book. One felt that it just didn't move along fast enough. But it was not enough to ruin the enjoyment of this book and I highly recommend you but it.

Still a great novel, but...,

This review is from: Cast in Silence (Paperback)
I love Sagara's writing style. I love all the characters in the Cast In... series. This book has a great story, and it's terrific to get more information on Kaylin's history. We also learn more about how the world works and some of the ways that magic works (or doesn't). Like all the previous books, I still devoured this one as quickly as possible. (And yes, I do think you need to have read the other books in the series, first.)Why only four stars, then? I am starting to grow frustrated with the lack of forward movement in the relationships Kaylin has with the two main men in her life: Nightshade and Severn. There are some events that happen in this book that *should* have led to some real movement, one way or the other, in her relationships. Are she and Severn friends? Lovers? Brother/sisterly? Does she want to jump Nightshade's bones or just use him for his knowledge? I feel like I'm missing out on conversations, feelings, discussions that would give me a much better sense of how she feels about either of these men--even if it's increasing confusion. And, for goodness sakes, it's written in 3rd person with views from both men's points of view, so there's plenty of opportunity to give us some insight into their feelings about her. But we don't get anything at all. Don't know if you read your reviews, Ms. Sagara, but please, oh please, give us some kind of evolution in either (preferably both) of her relationships with these guys in the next book! 24 of 29 people found the following review helpful

Good, a bit slow paced, but still not what I wanted,
By Leslie Vanderford - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cast in Silence (Paperback)
I have to start out by admitting that I've reached the point that I want something very specific (Nightshade) from this series and will find it lacking until that happens. The book probably deserves closer to 4 stars but I personally can't give it that rating. I also admit that the more I like an author/series the tougher I am with ratings. I'll try to list out the pros/cons for those not as Nightshade obsessed.PROS: 1. Maturity. We are seeing increasing signs of Kaylin gaining some maturity here. A lot of reviews from past books have complained about Kaylin's immaturity and I think readers will be happy with this development. 2. Great ending. I'm not going to give anything away but I absolutely loved how the book wrapped up its plot line. 3. Nice background. I enjoyed learning about Kaylin's background. I liked how the author integrated the background story with the rest of the book. We learned quite a bit of background but there were only a small number of flash backs. It was nicely done. CONS: 1. Slower paced. I'm not sure why but the book felt a lot slower paced. I'd guess it was because it had more self-reflection and less running around. This is actually a very small con because I enjoyed the slower paced scenes it was just not quite the right balance for me. 2. Nightshade. Obviously this was coming. I want more Nightshade. The scenes with Nightshade far exceeded my expectations and surprised me with the content (again not giving away spoilers here). However, there were far too few of them. It was obvious by the end of the book that these scenes were thrown in as set up for future books. I don't want to wait anymore even if the next book hints at having a lot more Nightshade. Again, I have to admit that until I see significant progression with Nightshade I'm just not going to be happy. I'm sure once I've gotten to read that plot line, I will enjoy going back and reading these books. I just can't find as much satisfaction when I want something else. 4 of 5 people found the following review helpful

Disappointed in this bridge novel,
By A. McMullen "amcmullen4" - Published on Amazon.com

This is a middle book in a series that will not make sense unless the others are read first. This is definitely a bridge novel. Unlike the other novels in the series, it doesn't move the plot foward much or develop the characters. I love this series for it's well crafted world, it's rounded and flawed characters, the fast pace and the strong female protagonist who grows in every story. She doesn't much in this one. This is a very introspective novel, a lot of it told in flashback with some action towards the end. My issue with this book is there was a very nice short story in here (essential to the next novel) and it was heavily fleshed out to make a full book. It probably deserves more than 3 stars, but I am harder on good authors who disappoint me ..... We do find out what Kaylin was doing during her 6 months in Barren. |
