Product Description

From Amazon.com

Inspired by "Gulliver's Travels," the fantasy-adventure Castle in the Sky (1986) was Hayao Miyazaki's third feature, and helped to establish his reputation as a visionary in both Japan and America. The orphan Sheeta inherited a mysterious crystal that links her to the legendary sky-kingdom of Laputa. With the help of resourceful Pazu and a rollicking band of sky pirates, she makes her way to the ruins of the once-great civilization. Sheeta and Pazu must outwit the evil Muska, who plans to use Laputa's science to make himself ruler of the world. Castle echoes elements in Myazaki's earlier Nausicaä, and anticipates imagery in his later films, from My Neighbor Totoro to Spirited Away. The exciting flying sequences, appealing characters, and fantastic vision of a steam-powered future Jules Verne might have imagined make Castle in the Sky a must-have for fans of Japanese and Western animation. (Unrated: suitable for ages 10 and older: violence) --Charles Solomon

2.0 out of 5 stars only not bad for a animation made 17 yrs ago, April 16 2003
This review is from: Castle in the Sky (DVD)
if you've seen "Mononoke Hime" and " Sen to Chihiro" before you see this one, be careful, you'll be quite disappointed with this one, 'cause it can't compare with those two in every aspects, no matter in the whole story, the picture or the music, it's just totally out of date in today's standrd, i had this dvd just because i'm fan of miyazaki's animation, speaking of this dvd alone, it's not worth owning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Castle in the Sky...., July 12 2004
This review is from: Castle in the Sky (DVD)
Is it just me, or do those very words, without even knowing what they refer to, contain a whimsical, imagination-inspiring power to them?

"Castle in the Sky" is by Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, who I've come to believe is one of the most masterful storytellers alive today, and maybe of all time. It begins with a young girl, Sheeta, drifting down from the sky into the arms of a young miner named Pazu. From there begins an incredible adventure as these two search for answers to the girl's origins while running from both air pirates as well as mysterious agents. I don't intend to reveal much of the plot here, but suffice it to say, this movie reignited the feelings I used to have as a child when watching such classics as "The Wizard of Oz" and the "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (which I also just recently purchased on DVD.

The movie was created several years ago, but was recently brought to America, with a wonderful redubbing into English, thanks to Disney Studios. If you're looking for visuals like the mind-blowing, computer simulations in recent Disney hits such as "Finding Nemo", this isn't it. However, if you're a fan of traditional cel animation, this film may be one of the best ever produced. Miyazaki's attention to detail, his ability to bring these two dimensional characters to life, is awe-inspiring.

For me, the greatest thing about this movie is that it's reminded me of the kind of fictional magic I hope to create myself one day, and makes me wonder if it's too late in my life for me to become an animator. The bad thing about seeing a movie like this, is that I know that I could never produce anything nearly as beautiful.

Fortunately for me, if I ever get the opportunity, I'm just stubborn, determined, and delusional enough to give it a shot anyway.

3.0 out of 5 stars FYI - STILL "DUBTITLES" AND NOT JAPANESE TRANSLATED "SUBTITLES" (REVIEW FOR 2010 RE-RELEASE), Mar 16 2010

This review is from: Castle in the Sky (DVD)
After some investigating (and an erroneous online review) I was stupidly given to believe that this re-release had been properly English subtitled with corrected Japanese translations (for those interested in watching the film in it's original language) but alas, after forking over the additional funds for this, my third version of this film on DVD (having previously purchased a rather nice "Studio Ghibli" collection DVD box set as an Asian import (with truer subtitles but with a lot of, "Engrish" translations and miss-synced or flash past text) and the previous Disney release) I was ticked to discover that the subtitles where still dubtitles (it is very evident from the beginning of the film as the pirates keep referring to their leader (an old cantankerous woman) as "Mama", but the word never appears in either the subtitles or English audio dub).

So if you where hopping (like me) that this re-release would have fixed this issue, then prepared to be disappointed :(

BTW: the three star ratting is due to the lack of proper subtitles, as the film itself is worth 5+ stars.
