Writing gone bad,
By Jerry J. "Jerry from Vancouver" (Vancouver, B.C. Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Castle: The Complete Fourth Season - DVD Box Set (DVD)
After watching the 4th season on TV, it appears that the writing in the Castle series has gone to bargain basement hollywood ! Watching Castle and Becket interact is like watch a pair of immature 4 year olds playing dress up ! While the actors are top notch and the other production values are very good, the writing is juvenile. Imagine how good this series would be if it had writers the caliber of those in Britain who produced the British series State of Play .Instead we are burdened with scenarios in which Castle and Beckett are artificially prevented from discussing their feelings for each other, scenarios which a 10 year old could imagine. All this because the writer is too lazy or too limited to be able to write about a grown up relationship. Now, if the series were just a murder mystery without this teenage romantic sideline ( a la Poirot, for example ), it would at least be less aggravating. Even a more in-depth development of the character of Castle's mother could be far more involving than the endless playing with the shallow love lives of Beckett and Castle. So, for me , new programs in this series call for a big thumbs down, way down. This writer has just run out of ideas and has his characters running around in the same circle , repeating their lifeless affair, with only cosmetic changes in the different programs to enable us to tell one episode from another . I know this season was great but I think they should have kept Kate's character the happy innocent and modest and sharp speaking character like in the first season. I think this season went to dark and gloomy. If there is a 5th season.I do hope the writers go back to writing fun and cheerful episodes. Real life is hard enough people need to escape to good old teasing and fun. I know murder is not funny but they could make situations funny like in the first season. They should abandon the story line of the killer after her. Also write about her forging on without thinking of her mother's death. Now that she finally said she loves Castle. The writers should write around her and Castle's life at the precinct. Finally get married and have fun together at home.Just like the TV show Hart to Hart. Make her go back to work with Castle and the five friends get back to good old comradeship. We should see more of Kevin Ryan's wife and the Esposito and Lainy get together .Than the 6 friends meet at Castle and Kate's place for porker games and just happens to analyze their recent murder cases and discussing murders that just happen.

Way back when Nixon was President I watched Bruce Willis in Moonlighting and fell in love with the kind of comedy and relationship that now sizzles and pops between Detective Kate Beckett and novelist Richard Castle.Beckett and Castle are two beautiful people with a few scars and flaws that makes them believably human. (Like the play on names, too.) Castle's devotion to his daughter and his relationship with his quirky actress mother add dimension and depth and more ways to have fun in this television series. Kate's strong, by-the-book behavior is the perfect foil for Richard Castle's 12-year-old boyish ways (even though he is WAY past that age and has a daughter older than that.) He has a Peter Pan syndrome that alternates with responsible father, man-about-town, famous writer, and loving son, not to mention a strong and worthy civilian partner for homocide detective -- Kate who has her own closet full of secrets and designer clothing. I came to this series late, but fell hard and fast for this unorthodox crime fighting duo. Just watched an episode from season 4 and can't wait to get my hands on the DVD. Send it Amazon! Send it soon! I have seasons 1-3 and the episodes are definitely re-watchable. Quality production all the way. Great ensemble cast. Can't think of anything that I can find fault with. The humor is perfect, the chemistry just steamy enough and the sweet family relationships are just quirky enough to add spice. The 'family' at the precinct add balance and more pleasure. What can I say, this is one television series that has it all! Romance, suspense, action, adventure, and family! And the dialogue is smart and original. The plot twists fresh and often totally unexpected. A wonderful diversion from the cares of the world with some mystery and mayhem and for us writer types -- a wonderful subplot that explores book writing and funnels into our dreams of someday walking the red carpet for our book signings. 14 of 15 people found the following review helpful

A WELCOME SURPRISE...,
By Geary A., Jones - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Castle: The Complete Fourth Season - DVD Box Set (DVD)
I didn't start watching CASTLE until the first abbreviated season was nearly over- expecting yet another predictably bland cop show. BONES was fun for a bit, but CASTLE puts a new twist on classic thirties who-done-it's ( THE THIN MAN in particular... ), and great TV shows ( like MOONLIGHTING ) where fun, and character developement were every bit as important as solving the crime. The chemistry between Fillion, and Katic is extraordinary, and the supporting cast adds realdepth to this quite delicious blend of murder, romance, and ( rarities of rarities ) actual 'wit.' 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful

great humanity in a suspense drama/comedy,
By Mme Linda Watten "American booklover" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Castle: The Complete Fourth Season - DVD Box Set (DVD)
What is unique about Castle is the humanity of the characters. The relationships among all the characters and especially Castle and his daughter and mother are well drawn and complex. Castle and Beckett of course are wonderfully paired, very seductive. It is refreshing to watch a show that becomes familiar to you in a warm way, almost as if you were part of the family.
