Review

"[A] heart-warming cat rescue tale...Taylor is a striking, well-rounded character. He displays all the energy and eagerness of a typical young boy who loves animals, especially cats...The dialogue in this novel, both internal and actual is up-to-date and realistic, moving the action along well...This story will no doubt prove very popular with elementary school readers across Canada and the U.S." (The Winnipeg Review 20110915)

"Walters does a nice job in crafting a story that could be used to teach multiple subjects in a middle-school curriculum...Contain[s] enough interesting information about feral cat colonies and Toronto's cultural diversity to provide for interesting classroom discussions." (CM Magazine 20110901)

"A wonderful read for any young person, especially one who is ready to develop their own values and make their own choices. Educators would find this book an excellent catalyst for a discussion on community, activism and citizenship." (Resource Links )

"Walters' story—written in collaboration with students in Toronto schools—moves fast and is plenty appealing...Readers will be too eager to see what happens...Solid writing, strong kid characters, caring adults, and cute animals could make this a popular choice." (Booklist )

"[With] an authentic-sounding narrative voice...the book does a good job of incorporating the theme of cultural diversity into a personal story about accepting change...Taylor's voice is the novel's greatest strength, and his relationship with the cat colony, and one cat in particular, is where the story really engages." (Quill & Quire )

Product Description

Taylor and his mother have moved from a small northern town to the heart of Toronto. The differences are dramatic as Taylor becomes part of a classroom of kids as diverse as the city itself. While taking a shortcut across a junkyard with his new best friend, Simon, Taylor becomes aware of a colony of wild cats that make the junkyard their home. Assisted by his classmates, teacher and the security guard, Mr. Singh, Taylor takes a special interest in caring for the cats. Suddenly there is an announcement—the junkyard is being redeveloped to become condominiums. Can Taylor and his friends save the cats of the colony from certain death?

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Story with interesting details, Feb 14 2012
This review is from: Catboy (Paperback)
I picked up the novel for my daughters because they love cats and we've read other good stuff by Eric Walters. Before I gave my daughters the novel, I quickly read it myself. I loved it. I loved how Taylor wants to go home to get potatoes peeled for his mother, to make her life a little easier -- he models a loving helpfulness that is missing from most cultural products. I love the novel's discussion of racism and how Taylor models learning about other cultures and languages. My favourite part is Taylor's love of the feral cats and their rescue. I would think that some of the behaviour described was hard to believe except that my own interactions with feral cats would be hard to believe if they didn't happen in front of my eyes. In the most recent incident, I was trying to catch a feral kitten that was seven weeks old in loft of the barn in an attempt to tame her. Her feral uncle, who preferred to be at least 20 feet away from any human, and saw himself as her parent, called her over to him, keeping his body between myself and the kitten, so that I just had to reach over him to pick her up. If he was tame, I would think that was extra special behaviour, but since he is quite wild (never ever petted or held), it still boggles my mind. I think he must understand the merits of being tame (pets, treats, table scraps) while not being able to conquer his own fears. I think of the feral cats in three categories, tameable with enough effort, crazy wild, and neither ridiculously wild nor tameable. I put this helpful cat in the third category.

A minor criticism of the novel's description of the feral cat colony: the novelist describes a fat, male cat as the dominant cat of the colony, but, in my experience, it is always a fit, fierce female cat who is dominant. Her need to eat to feed her babies and to protect those babies is far greater than any male desire for dominance. Males try to keep on the females' good sides. Ferocity, more than age or size, determines dominance.
