If you wonder too long about where to place a band like Dredg, you’ll miss where they’re going. The band slips between the cracks of whatever rock classifications you try to stuff them into. Likewise, the Bay Area is just a mailing address; Dredg isn’t evocative of any particular place or scene. So what do we make of a band that makes music that’s heavy, pretty, experimental and tuneful – sometimes all in the same song? You can be frustrated that Dredg rejects the idea that the goal of music is to be easily described a couple of buzz words. Or with attentive ears and an open mind, you can enjoy the hell out of ‘Catch Without Arms.’

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! Sep 21 2005
Format:Audio CD
Granted it's not their best album, Catch Without Arms is still amazing. The great lyrics are still there, the talent certainly isn't gone! So what if the sound is a little more mainstream? Does being popular make a band worse? No! Just listen to the title track Catch Without Arms. Not only is it a great song but it perfectly sums up this backlash towards their new album. They did not compromise their art they simply evolved. Get over it!

P.S. I recently saw Dredg live and it was hands down the best concert I have ever seen. Take the first chance to see them you get. They were amazing!!!

ps. I disagree with the claims certin ppl are making about dredg selling out in their new album are wrong.

pss. I went to one of their shows, it owned my soul.

1.0 out of 5 stars heartbreaking Sep 11 2005
Format:Audio CD
i've carefully listened to catch without arms a dozen times now and i would have to say it is quite awful. i don't know if its from working with terry date or if U2 finally got to them, but they have really let things slide. as a whole, the album lacks the passion of el cielo and leitmotif. i could tell something was wrong when the beginning of ode to the sun immediately reminded me of brushstroke: debtfoabaaposba, thus signaling the beginning of the end of any progressive musical thought. the album didn't get anymore creative from there, as they chose to work within the bland formulaic structures of radio music, removing any experimentation with time signatures. dino's drumming is surprisingly weak compared to his past efforts. this is coming from the man who said he would never record the same beat twice. dredg has gone from one of the most inspiring bands to pop trash in one album. they are to their genre, as simple plan is to punk. Please ignore my 1 star review, as it truly deserves -58 stars (-39 for making a lousy album, -19 for selling out).

I have to say that this crappy album sounds pretty generic, possibly made to please some sheep to make some money. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars If they were trying to make a crappy album, they succeeded.
I swear when I listen to this album, it's like their drummer went to Lars Ulrich Drum Camp cause he does nothing original (in contrast to the effort on El Cielo). Read more
