Murder Mystery by Author with a Past,

I generally prefer my mysteries to be part of a series. I enjoy the character development that builds over a series instead of being confined to a one time effort. I was looking for a lighter series as some of the series I have been reading are really too true to life, right out of the newspapers, so I wanted something a bit more cozy rather than clinical. I found The Cater Street Hangman was promising for a first effort and was ready to try the next book in the series. I like to look up the author because they usually have fairly interesting lives. Well, I'm not comfortable with this author's background and have decided to move onto another series.

An Intriguing Start to a Brilliant Series,

Read the Carter Street Hangman and you will find yourself quickly lost in the world of Victorian London. Full of mystery, high society, and murder, this book is intriguing to say the least.This book is the first book in the popular Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mystery series and will have you running to the bookstore to get the second installement(if not the whole series, like me!) The Carter Street Hangman is a fabulous start to a wonderful collection of crime mysteries. What I found so refreshing about this book was that fact that it was so calm, so sophisticated. Because of it's Victorian setting there were no gunshots, no foul language or explicit sex scenes. Even though the characters were watching their servants, neighbors and family members die at the hands of a madman, they remain composed and somewhat calm. The high society Ellison family faces these deaths with a sense of purpose as well as dignity. The romance between Charlotte Ellison and police officer, Thomas Pitt begins to take place in this book, and by the end pages a true partnership is made. The sweet love affair between these two characters lends an enchanting twist to the story. Historical fiction and mystery lovers, you will find the perfect mix of both genres in this book. Read it and see for yourself.

Others on this site have said most of what I would say, had I read this book earlier. It was a great introduction to a series that is most intriguing and entertaining. There were enough clues to allow the reader to guess the murderer, but at the same time, they were few enough that occasional doubt arises.There is a good potrayal of middle class Victorian England and the social stratification. It does make the reader look forward to the next book in the series.
