Cats Don't Dance (DVD)

Cats Don't Dance is typical fare: a dancing cat who wants to be a Hollywood star circa 1939. Of course, animals only play animal roles in the movies, but our hero Danny (a cat) won't accept that as an answer. Plenty of big laughs for adults here, but there are also some wonderful characters including the bratty baby starlet Darla Dimple (Shirley Temple meets Baby Herman) and her Schwarzenegger-type bodyguard Max. There's also a jittery hippo, a cute penguin, and a keen elephant who helps Danny fulfill his dream and land the girl--err, cat. Randy Newman's songs are just as inspired as the film: a pleasant, kid-friendly picture with lots to satisfy the older crowd as well. --Doug Thomas --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic in its own right.... Jan. 25 2004
As far as Animated Musicals go, the songs in this could rival anything from Disney(Well, Randy Newman has done many things for Disney as well, so it makes perfect sense). The animation is colorful and splashy and the main theme/story is inventive. Not something to common in animated films these days.
The story follows Danny, a cat from Kokomo who has big dreams, dreams of becoming a HUGE story in Hollywood. He's even made a checklist, which includes getting a lead role by the end of the week. But Danny's dreams are cut down-to-size when he is cast in a movie with movie star Darla Dimples(A Shirley Temple-like star), a cute looking girl with a short temper and intense hatred for animals. He soon finds out that animals have no place in Hollywood, except as playing stereotypical roles. Every single other animal he meets has some sort of dreams for making it big, but they've all been crushed in one way or another.
The thing I find so special about "Cats Don't Dance" is that, I really enjoyed it when I was 11yrs. Now I just thought it was a fun cartoon with some great tunes. But now that I'm older I see that the themes in this film parallel that of many ethnic actors trying to break into Hollywood, I guess, particularly blacks.
Cats Don't Dance, isn't for younger children, because well, it wont hold their attention span the whole time(Tried it with my 4yr nephew), even though there is a lot of slap-stick humor that kids love so much. I guess it all depends on the child. :D
If you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary, with some creative ideas, fun characters, great songs, fun animation, and an interesting and intelligent storyline that can appeal to children and adults alike, then I suggest "Cats Don't Dance".
*Enjoy* & God Bless ~Amy

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie! Nov. 25 2001
By Ethan
Format:VHS Tape
I'm a sucker when it comes to uplifting movies; this is about a small town cat that turns into a big movie star! But this is like my favorite movie, it's about a Cat named Danny that lives in little Kokomo, and wants to become a famous movie star. Image a 1930's time. (...) Drawing is good, there like animals, but they stand up, but very good drawing: 8.5/10 Fun, it's VERY FUN, a really good fun movie: 9.5/10 Movie play, only 1 hour and 20 minutes: 4/10 Sound, well there is lots of sound in the movie when they sing and dance: 10/10 Overall, this movie is super cool: 9.5/10, other then it being short, it is perfect. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Falling-off-your-seat funny June 12 2000
Format:VHS Tape
Contrary to Mr. Maltin's opinion, this movie isn't dreary. It's bright, clever, well animated, and well executed. Plus, it's funny, really funny. Not only that, you'll be snapping your fingers while watching this movie in no time flat. The characters are completely unforgettable. These are full toons we're talking about, like Bugs Bunny and Road Runner. This movie also doesn't try to be something it's not. It's not a grand adventure, and it's not a morality play. Many animated movies that tried to do one or the other or both have failed. This movie masks its message behind a just-have-fun attitude. Okay, so this isn't The Iron Giant or Bambi or what have you, but it's still fun all the same. Listen to the cover for once. It is the funniest animated movie since Aladdin. Well, one of the funniest now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple story for everyone who has a dream Sept. 12 2002
Cats Don't Dance is a wonderful story about a simple cat from small-town nowhere, looking to make it big in Hollywood, in the late thirties. Naive as he is, he thinks it should only take him a week until he gets his first big part. But that was before he met Darla, a child-star similar to Shirley Temple, but with a much worse temper - and to top it off, she hates animals. And apparently, so does Hollywood. In Hollywood, Cats don't dance, or sing, or act; they meow, and that's it. Danny attempts to beat the odds, and become a big star. This movie is also filled will wonderful musical numbers reminiscent of the jazz age. This is a movie for adults and kids alike, but it is especially for those who enjoy accomplishing the impossible, and for those with a dream they won't deny

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy This for Yourself Nov. 29 2003
I've been waiting for five years for this to come out on DVD because I know if I buy it on VHS I'll just have to buy more copies after I wear the first one out. This is one of the best animated movies of all times. It's an adorable cartoon without the saccharine overdose that many of them have. The hero is the adorable Danny, who dreams of becoming a movie star. The backup cast is just as enchanting, and are a little more jaded than the average cartoon character. The pacing is almost like speed, and it will sweep you up and hold you until the very end. If you want something deep, buy The Lion King. If you want something fun that will make you feel good, buy Cats Don't Dance. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cats Don't Dance: how ironic! Feb. 6 2003
The cats in this film actually DO dance-quite well! Especially since all the "choregraphy" was done by Gene Kelly (who was totally for the idea). This may be one of those cartoons that has a lot of humor only adults would get. I thought it was great how the included 30's actors, like Mae West, Cary Grant and Clark Gable. The lines were great!
My favorite character was Sawyer, the cat who Danny showed her talents. "So much for preservin' the species," she says. The film's songs are overall great. My favorites are Tell me Lies, Hollwood, and Animal Jam. The only part of the latter one that I like is the dancing sequence performed by Danny and Sawyer.
Bottom line: SEE IT!!
