Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Fun to look at and to read, easy to execute, relatively yummy and morally irresistible, this collection of vegan recipes from a wide array of notables adds up to a powerful argument against the Atkins low-carbohydrate diet, which encourages the heavy consumption of meat and animal products. In his brief introduction, James Cromwell, who played the laconic but lovable Farmer Hoggett in the 1995 hit movie Babe, describes how his time on the set surrounded by smart, friendly little pigs made it impossible for him to eat pork and indeed any meat ever again. Recipes are provided by a range of famous names, from Alicia Silverstone (who shares her recipe for "Steamy, Creamy Artichoke Dip") to Sir Paul McCartney ("All You Need Is Avocado Soup," etc.) to that surprisingly vegan cult TV figure William Shatner (and why wasn't his bean dip called "Bean Me Up Scotty!"?). Other celebs include Fiona Apple, Bob Barker, Jackie Chan and Bea Arthur. Some assertions here about the harmful effects of animal fat on the body have been challenged by recent research supporting Atkins's long-held contention that adding fat to our diet may actually help us slim down and get healthy. Still, there's little arguing with the compelling vision of living and eating in a way that doesn't harm other creatures. Even non-veggies will enjoy the wit and four-color photos lavished throughout this book.

From Library Journal

This collection serves up "Animal-Friendly Appetizers," "Benevolent Breakfasts," and other vegan recipes from Paul McCartney, Alec Baldwin, and lesser-known supporters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Accompanying the recipes are black-and-white photographs of their contributors and brief quotes; sidebars on vegetarianism and PETA's philosophy are scattered throughout. There are certainly better vegetarian cookbooks available, including Robin Robertson's Vegan Planet (see above), and not every vegetarian is a fan of PETA's tactics, but the organization does have more than 700,000 members. Buy for demand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Recipes For A Healthy Lifestyle, April 13 2004
By
A. Vegan (Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: PETA Celebrity Vegan Cookbook (Paperback)
I love this book! There are so many tantalizing recipes to try. The other great thing about this book is that celebrities who are either vegan or vegetarian contributed to make this book. I'm sure that when you see pictures of some people like Bill Goldberg - a WWF Wrestler, you'll be surprised. Vegetarianism is no longer a topic to shy away from. Millions of people are changing their lives for the better and cutting out animal products from their diets. Now when someone asks you just what exactly do you eat... you'll be able to brag about the divine desserts and mouth watering entrees that are all animal free! Do your body & the animals a favor and buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars good recipies, cheapo book, Aug 18 2003
This review is from: PETA Celebrity Vegan Cookbook (Paperback)
i think it was about a week or so after i started using this book that it started falling apart. now the first 32 pages can be pulled out singly to set on the counter when desired. it actually works great, just hope i don't ever lose them. the binding is the biggest joke in book binding ever. it's just glue on the edge of a bunch of papers, and obviously doesn't hold well or my pages wouldn't be detatched from their home.

the pictures are really badly shot, and very few show the stars to their own advantage.

there are at least two desserts, i believe, that are pictured on the main dessert page of which the recipies are not given in the book. it would be nice if there were more pictures of the end results. there really are, well, now that i'm looking for it, none whatsoever. i think one of the three desserts pictured might have its recipie in the book.

really good recipies. great egg salad like stuff, the best recipie i've tried, with a few variations. (as a side note, i've found leeks to be phoenomenal in egg salady things.) great french toast. some nice quotes. not great from a health standpoint at all, though, including all kinds of hydrogenated tofutti products in recipies. the boyfriend loved the cheesecake, and i thought it was good, too. contained two tubs of tofutti cream cheese, main ingredient partially hydrogenated oil. yeah, i'd buy it again, definately. my main suggestion is to not expect it to be as professional as you would naturally expect...expect something that looks a little bit amateurly designed. and dirt low quality binding.
