The artist list for this recording really reads like who is who in classical music. Well, at least who ruled the classical stage for several decades in the 20th century. Martha Argerich, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Svyatoslav Richter - these names mean so much for piano and cello fans. With exception of Misha Maisky, we're unlikely to encounter a cellist of Rostropovich's caliber nowadays. And it's very nice of DG to include both Argerich and Richter on one CD - they were both incredibly gifted (and intense!) pianists, but their styles were markedly different.
The high point of this CD though is Chopin's achingly beautiful Polonaise Brillante. It's instantly recognizable and it's fun to come back to over and over.
How could one comment on technical or interpretative merits of the music here? I certainly don't have enough credentials for that. The playing is heavenly, I'm just glad this CD is still in circulation.
