Book Description

Jan. 27 2003
This is an enchantingly told collection of the stirring sagas of gods and goddesses, fabulous beasts, strange creatures, and such heroes as Cuchulain, Fingal, and King Arthur from the ancient Celtic world. Included are popular myths and legends from all six Celtic cultures of Western Europe-Irish, Scots, Manx, Welsh, Cornish, and Breton. Here for the modern reader are the rediscovered tales of cattle raids, tribal invasions, druids, duels, and doomed love that have been incorporated into, and sometimes distorted by, European mythology and even Christian figures. For example, there is the story of Lugh of the Long Hand, one of the greatest gods in the Celtic pantheon, who was later transformed into the faerie craftsman Lugh-Chromain, and finally demoted to the lowly Leprechaun. Celtic Myths and Legends also retells the story of the classic tragic love story of Tristan and Iseult (probably of Cornish origin-there was a real King Mark and a real Tristan in Cornwall) and theoriginal tale of King Arthur, a Welsh leader who fought against the invading Anglo-Saxons. In the hands of Peter Berresford Ellis, the myths sung by long-dead Celtic bards come alive to enchant the modern reader. "The casual reader will be best entertained by ... the legends themselves ... colored with plenty of swordplay, ... quests, shape-shiftings, and druidic sorcery."-Publishers Weekly

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as interesting as I thought March 4 2014

I was happy with the seller, shape of the book and arrival time. This book was not as appealing to me as I thought it would be but that's just a reflection of my own taste and nothing to do with Amazon, the seller or book itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good so far Nov. 13 2013

I've only read 3 of the stories so far, but they are very well written and give some insight into Celtic beliefs and culture. But the thing I like most is that they are split up into where the legends came from (Ireland, Brittany etc...).

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK May 19 2003
By A Customer
This book contains stories from almost every Celtic country; Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany. The author writes these tales like short stories, which is easier to understand than the original versions I'm sure. If you want to hear a veriety of stories from all over the Celtic world, then buy this book.

Written as only Peter Berresford Ellis can. The man is a wizard at making words come to life on any subject he chooses. A great way to pass on the legends of your Celtic heritage.
