3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with practice questions, Aug 12 2009
By K. Lee - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) Review Manual (Paperback)
I am happy to say I passed the CNE exam, but I felt less confident about taking the exam after I completed the Comprehensive Practice Questions. The questions included two on Berwick and change. I was surprised that out of 55 questions 2 would be based on Berwick. Overall I found many of the questions to be knowledge based, such as what is the third step in Roger's five steps in the process of diffusion of innovation. This made me worry that I did not know enough specific facts from the writings of specific authors. Both the unit practice test questions and the comprehensive questions included concepts that I was unable to locate in the text of the book. In the comprehensive practice, I found some rationale for answers to be confusing. I suspected there was an error in the question/answer/rationale. One of the reasons I bought the book was for the practice questions. Now that the test is behind me, I believe that many of the practice questions provide an inaccurate view of the actual exam.

If you do not like material presented in an outline/bullet fashion, you may not like the text of the book. I know I wish the text included more examples and not simply bullet points.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best for experienced nurse educators or educator tracked MSNs, May 3 2010

Although I agree with another reviewers comments regarding the practice tests (both chapter and comprehensive), I already assumed this would be the case as most texts have inadequate test banks (evidence-based, not just my opinion). Nevertheless, you would expect better from some of the nation's best nurse educators.

Overall, the text presented everything I needed to focus on for CNE prep. I took and passed the exam last Friday and there were only two questions which used material not covered in the review guide. If I had not been in an MSN educator track, I probably would have felt more confident reading Billings and Halstead, Bastable, and Oermann and Gaberson - but I teach for a living! Who has that kind of time? So, I would recommend this book for educators who are short on time, but know their way around a classroom, in general.

In fact, I'm buying two more copies and donating them to my program to help others pass the CNE.
