Le cru Taschen 2001 est un petit ouvrage efficace et sans prétention, qui peut être vu comme la crème d'un précédant millésime, le volumineux et indispensable 1 000 chairs. On se concentrera donc sur une sélection, plus modeste mais forcément plus exclusive, d'une centaine d'assises des plus célèbres créateurs, toutes devenues des icônes de leur époque. On commencera avec quelques pièces du début du XIXe pour balayer en profondeur le XXe siècle. Devant l'étonnante multiplicité des réponses à un besoin simple, on reconnaît à ces meubles d'avant-garde une qualité commune : "une rhétorique puissamment argumentée", une réponse aux nouvelles données de leur époque. On se concentrera sur l'essentiel car la traduction simultanée en allemand et en anglais, couplée au format poche et à la présentation une page-une chaise, laisse peu de place au texte. --Toma Damisch
