Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This illustrated spiral-bound diet book relies on encouraging those who want to lose weight to cut amounts rather than to radically change their food preferences. Based on a daily 1,300- to 1600-calorie range, depending on body size and level of activity, the Change One program requires those who undertake it to make just one weekly nutritional or other adjustment at a time. Hastings, a health editor, and his co-authors provide menus and calorie counts for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for the first four weeks, along with recipes that are not, except for portion size, radically different from what non-dieters eat. A typical breakfast may contain one scrambled egg with a hard roll and fruit salad or four silver dollar pancakes with sliced strawberries. In addition to listing measurements in ounces or cups, serving sizes are also given in colloquial terms such as thumb tip or golf ball. A portion for a beef stew dinner, for example, should be no larger than two baseballs. Restaurant meals are not prohibited and, in fact, eating out is suggested as a twice-weekly activity. Strategies as to what to order or request in many varieties of eating establishments are included. In addition to dietary changes, the authors recommend an exercise regime, stress busting techniques and ways to organize a diet-friendly kitchen. Because the diet plan focuses on detailed lifestyle as well as eating changes and contains many self-assessment quizzes, this is a program that should engage a committed dieter. Color illus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed in hard cover, July 20 2004

I was dissapointed in the hard cover version of this book, and would reccomend the soft cover spiral bound book if you are to get it. It has sound practical advice for the first time "dieter" but for people who have tried it all like myself I found the information repetitive, and most of the "Good Stuff" you can download online during the free trial period (like stretches and exercises for the desk bound.) If you are a seasoned dieter, you may want to pass on this one, but overall it was a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's 100 lbs less of me!, Aug 14 2003

When I picked up this book, I knew very little about nutrition and fitness. I read this book and followed the advice. Four months later, I'd lost 40 pounds without exercising! As a gift for myself, I joined Gold's Gym. That was four months ago. I've lost another 60 pounds! I'm now within a few pounds of my healthy weight and I know what/how to eat.

I wish I could buy a copy of this book for every American. It has changed my life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Same old stuff..., July 30 2003
This review is from: Change One (Hardcover)
I wasn't impressed with this book to tell you the truth. To me, this was just the same old advice repackaged. The basic idea of changing one thing at a time is great advice, but the book itself was nothing new. I think they could have focused a lot more on changing one thing at a time. Instead all they really did was break down the basic common sense weight loss diet into 12 chapters. This is really no different from the weight watchers plan for the most part. As far as changing one thing a week it would have made more sense for them to have actual steps like drinking more water this week, exercising 15 minutes a day this week etc. Instead what they really did was take breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, etc. and just break them into weeks where you incorporate your breakfast one week, lunch the next and so on. While this is a good idea I would have liked to have seen other ideas as well. Instead this is really just a recipe book with some basic advice.
