Review

"Raymond's essays are . . . tightly constructed and superbly written. . . . Goin's images, which are creatively integrated with the text, are as beguiling as they are striking. Much the same can be said for the historical prints interspersed throughout the book.. . . . Anyone searching for the trail that connects our landscapes of mineral production with our landscapes of consumption will likely find the essays and photographs in Changing Mines in America absorbing and thought-provoking."
(Geoffrey L. Buckley Geographical Review ) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

Most Americans today view mines as little more than ugly scars on the landscape, places with no connection to an American way of life. This creative new work will force many to rethink that impression: after an introduction to the history of mining in America, the authors present eight visual and historical essays about diverse sites across the nation, each of which reveals mines not simply as physical degradations but as evolving cultural artifacts of the American landscape.

This review is from: Changing Mines in America (Paperback)
Peter Goin is becoming one of my most favorite photographers, able to evoke the same emotions in landscapes that Sebastiao Salgado evokes with his portraits.

Mr. Goin compares and contrasts the state and evolution of various mines across the country with his contemporary photographs of mines taken from roughly the same locations as vintage photographs. Particularly fascinating is his chapter on the Bingham Canyon copper pit mine, tracing its evolution from turn-of-the-century immigrant copper town to its current position as the world's largest man-made hole.

Also of note is his exploration of American Flats mine and its present-day existance as a de-facto "autonomous zone" where all forms of "outlaw culture" is practiced.

This book is a must for all persons interested in urban exploration and industrial processes, as well as those of us who are fascinated by the ways man changes the world around him.
