Book Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic contribution to Haitian Ethnomusicology April 19 2009
Rene Victor (1914-1985) was a Haitian sociologist and intellectual, author of essays in social psychology and the sociology of education. This 2007 paperback of 144 pages, in French, also publishes texte des chansons en créole haïtienne avec traduction française; Préface de Jean Price-Mars, Introduction et Transcription Musicale par le Professeur Werner A. Jaegerhuber, Ilustrations de Georges Remponeau. According to the publisher in Montreal, this book reflects the prodigious musical memory of Haiti, with a wide repertoire of songs, drawing from different places (mountains, plains and sea), René Victor here opens a new chapter in ethnography haïtienne collecting (during the 1930s) "these remnants of ancient civilizations that still litter the earth Haitian." To appreciators of Haitian art, the illustrations by Geo Remponeau make this book particularly noteworthy and worthwhile.

The Introduction et Transcription Musicale par le Professeur Werner A. Jaegerhuber is of interest to readers of the recent University of Chicago book published in English Vodou Nation: Haitian Art Music and Cultural Nationalism
