I first bought this LP (yes, LP) when I found it in a dusty used album bin, about 2 blocks from Fantasy Records in Berkeley where it was recorded. The album was in perfect condition, so I made a tape copy that got played year after year. Eventually I wore the tape out, so I took out my pristine album and made another copy. No one I knew had the LP or knew where to find it, so they'd ask me to make them a tape. I wouldn't copy the LP directly - it was priceless to me - though I'd lend out the tape for them to copy. Eventually someone never returned it, so I made yet another copy from the LP. I wore that one out too, but by then they'd issued the CD and I bought that. The CD had one or two tracks the LP didn't have, and to be honest they added little for me - the LP as it stood was perfect. A few years later a bunch of my CDs were stolen, so I bought it again, which is my current copy.
There really isn't any more to be said about this CD. Everyone's seen the show, and the music of Vince Guaraldi is timeless. One of the all-time greatest jazz musicians, Guaraldi had a unique and almost universally liked style few, if any, modern musicians can touch. The soundtrack has taken on a life of its own - play it at a party and people will smile and relax as they are almost subconsciously transported back to childhood.
The Christmas season starts for me right after Thanksgiving, when I first play "A Charlie Brown Christmas". Through all the hassles of traffic, shopping, cooking, cleaning, and the overall holiday rush, this CD always reminds me of the true meaning of Christmas, what this season is truly about. And I still take out and admire securely-stored LP version which I will never give up.

Contrary to reviews I've read on Amazon.com that have stated these are alternate takes, that depends on one's point of view. If you grew up listening to the original album, you might consider these to be alternate takes, and therefore you have the original white cover "A Charlie Brown Christmas CD" to fall back on. On the other hand, those of us who grew up with the original animated Peanuts TV Christmas special and have watched it 30 times over+ know that the versions in the special itself differ from what appeared on that original album and the subsequent white covered CD(that claimed to be original TV soundtrack). This, my friends is the finally the real deal, From "Linus & Lucy", Skating" down to "Hark, The Herold Angels Sing". There are a couple of tracks that I might question to be alternates. the Vocal "Christmastime Is Here" sounds a little different, mainly because the childrens vocals are mixed so quielty, as opposed to so louldy in the TV special. All in all, the versions within this packages sound much closer to what appear in the TV special overall, and after a whole life of waiting, I get to hear THE definitive version of "Linus & Lucy" in true stereo! What a joy!. And for thse that picky about alternate versions? Buy both! They're both worth having, this one alone for it's Animation Cel like cover art if not for the great versions I spoke of. Merry Christmas Charlie Brown!

Something about the jazz of Vince Guraldi, combined with the nostalgia of the Peanuts gang, allows this album to be a time machine for me, taking me back to when Christmas was a spectacle of awe and mystery. It seems strange that music can be so evocative and so indescribable at the same time. All that I can say is that it helps me recapture the wonder that I used to have at Christmas.
The specifics:
"O Tannenbaum" and the vocal rendition of "Christmastime is Here" are excellent and just as I remember them. "Fur Elise" is also nice, and "Greensleeves" was a perfect way to end the album. I just wish there were some way to work in Schroeder's rendition of "Jingle Bells" (his staccatto single notes become funnier everytime I hear them).
On the downside, the vocal rendition of "Christmastime is Here" has an abrupt cutoff at the end, which has been noted by other reviewers. Also, the "Linus and Lucy" on this album ends more 'jazzy' than I prefer, but that's just me.
Buy this album and enjoy it!

I guess we all bring our own baggage to the books we read, the movies we see, and, of course, the music we listen to.
Maybe what makes me and others feel good and also cry when we hear this music (e.g., "Christmastime is Here" almost always slows my heart beat, raises the hair on my arms, and centers me in my soul....along with getting the tear ducts loosened up) is how it can transport us to a time of innocence. We feel good about returning to those days when we didn't worry about mortgages and doctor bills and tuition for college-aged children and AIDS and terrorists. We feel sad that those days are gone.
I wonder whether this music has the same effect on those who didn't first hear it as a child.
No matter, I know that one of the tracks on the album, "My Little Drum", is so sweet and poignant that, although my chorus recently sang "Little Drummer Boy" about 30 times over the past month, I didn't even recognize "My Little Drum" as a takeoff on the old classic, but, rather, a heart-tugging melody unto itself.
I bought this CD for my wife, but I know I'll still be playing this CD in July, long after my wife has put away all her Christmas albums.
Thanks, Vince; thanks, Charles. I hope to hear you in the hereafter. I hope to thank you for remembering the real meaning of Christmas.
