Product Description

From Amazon.com

What would inspire a young Scottish woman to parachute into Europe and join the underground French Resistance during World War II's darkest hours? If we're to believe this tale, 'twas simply love for her captured boyfriend. While it boasts another stellar turn by star Cate Blanchett and the promising involvement of Oscar®-winning Shakespeare in Love composer Stephen Warbeck, the latter's orchestral score ultimately points up a sometimes troubling aspect of film projects: the brooding, subtly dramatic cues that work so well in a film can be a mighty dry 50-minute listen divorced from their imagery. The coloration of Warbeck's writing here is superb; it evokes period, place, and dangerous circumstance with a quiet grace. But the lack of strong melodic themes and, especially, a greater dynamic range hamper the soundtrack album's appeal. While some may find its quiet, autumnal tone a distinctly subdued mood setter, others may find its sharp contrast with Shakepeare's vigor a bit ponderous. --Jerry McCulley

It's not worth the money. May 6 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This CD seems to me too expensive when I take into consideration the musical score presented. A big lover/collector of soundtracks, I was looking forward to purchasing this disc, especially as I have seen and loved "Charlotte Gray"-the movie. It was a huge disappointment. The long and melancholic piece in the very beginning of the film that actually seized my attention instantaneously is only 2 mintes long on this CD, while the short, unmemorable, and pretty simplistic pieces, such as the track "After the Letter" are, on the other hand, 4 to 5 minutes long. It was very frustrating to discover the music you didn't really appreciate being prolonged while the other much-liked tracks were shortened. Not worth the price. The best advice I would give is order it used.

An achingly beautiful theme Jan 19 2003
Format:Audio CD
Stephen Warbeck has composed a masterpiece. His exquisite theme for Charlotte Gray bookends the CD and is woven into the cues throughout. This is romantic string music, and I heartily recommend the CD.
